GamePro was a popular gaming magazine during roughly the same time period as Electronic Gaming Monthly, however it seemed to be targeted towards a younger audience and I never really thought it was as good. It was loved by many though. The February 1996 issue includes the following:

    Features

    • Editor’s Choice Awards for 1995! – Top honors went to Doom for the PlayStation, Virtua Fighter 2 for the Saturn, Vectorman for the Genesis, Donkey Kong Country 2 for the Super Nintendo, Tekken 2 for the arcade, NFL GameDay for the PlayStation as the best sports game and Chrono Trigger for the SNES as the best RPG. Best games were also named for the 32X, Atari Jaguar, Virtual Boy, Sega CD, CD-i, Game Boy, 3DO, Neo Geo and Game Gear. Doom in particular seems like an odd choice as it was much better on the PC a couple of years before and there were better PlayStation games.
    • Cover Feature: Street Fighter Alpha – The Street Fighter craze seemed to go on forever. GamePro considered Street Fighter Alpha to be the best ever and this article goes into detail about this game on the PlayStation.

    SWATPro Strategy Section

    • Loaded ProStrategy Guide (PlayStation) – Loaded was a top down, sci-fi themed shoot-’em-up with a dark sense of humor. This strategy guide features the first four levels.
    • The Fighter’s Edge – A column dedicated to strategies for fighting games. In this issue, Street Fighter Alpha for the PlayStation is featured, tutoring you on the basic moves and combos for six of the characters.
    • SWATPro – Shorter tips and tricks for various games. This month the featured tip is how to play as Smoke in Mortal Kombat 3 on the Sega Genesis.
    • Breath of Fire II Strategy Guide (SNES) – One of the best RPGs on the SNES, this is part one of a strategy guide that would be continued.
    • Earthworm Jim 2 ProStrategy Guide (SNES) – Maps and other tips and tricks for this Super Nintendo platformer.

Electronic Gaming Monthly Issue 021 April 1991 page 001

Source: Electronic Gaming Monthly – Issue Number 21 – April 1991

EGM was one of the most popular and one of my favorite video game magazines. Though I was never really a subscriber, I bought it pretty regularly from late 1989 until 1996 or so. The April 1991 issue includes:

    Departments

    • Insert Coin – The editorial this month discusses rumors and how the CD add-on for the Super Famicom and presumably Super Nintendo how now moved past the rumor stage. Too bad it was just into the vaporware stage…

    Features

    • EG Express – News this month includes Data East using Intel’s i750 chip, a chip designed to decompress video to make 30 fps full motion video playback from a CD possible, to make arcade games. It’s not clear to me any such games were produced though. I can’t find any other references to “Thunderstorm” which was one game mentioned here as being released soon. The MMX instruction set would be in part derived from the i750. Also making news was that Nintendo and Sony were going to introduce a Super Famicom CD-ROM device this year.

(NES), Laser Invasion (NES), The Lone Ranger (NES), Dead Moon (TurboGrafx-16), Raiden (Genesis), PGA Tour Golf (Genesis), Space Invaders ’91 (Genesis), James Pond (Genesis), Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis), Battle World (Neo Geo), and Street Fighter 2 (arcade).
