The 1990s were truly a great time for video game magazines. The contents of the November 1995 issue of EGM 2 includes:

    • The Heat Has Been Turned Up to High for the Next Mega Man Installment! – Mega Man X3 might be a little frustrating to gamers at first. However, after reading this issue’s 16-page strategy guide on the game, MM fans will have no problem battling the bad guys and finding cool items. Everything to help a stressed-out gamer has been included – from how to defeat the Bosses to maps on the various levels. Unlike the prequel, this version has several mechs that actually have a purpose, strategy, unique control as well as set abilities. You’ll learn how to use them all in this guide, too.
    • A Bit of Comic-Book Heaven Comes to the Arcades with Marvel Super Heroes! – If you thought Capcom’s X-Men was a fantastic game, be prepared to be blown away by Marvel Super Heroes. The Infinity Gems have been added to this game, giving it a unique twist. Although the game is still under construction, EGM 2 has a six-page blowout on this quarter-muncher. Check out your favorite superheroes’ super combos, such as Spider-Man’s Maximum Spider, Wolverine’s Weapon X, Captain America’s Final Justice and Hulk’s Gamma Crush. In addition to super combos, other devastating moves are listed.
    • The Latest and Possible Greatest MK Hits Arcades with New Moves and Modes! – As Mortal Kombat 3 hits the home market, fans of the once-cult game will find an awesome, brand-new update – Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. This isn’t a completely new release; however, it will feature four new characters as well as four unique backgrounds. In the Mortal Kombat tradition, there will also be plenty of new moves and secrets. EGM 2 digs into the latest addition with numerous exclusive pix and the latest look at this soon-to-be arcade hit!

Game Players Nintendo Guide, March 1993

There were a number of general and system specific magazines with the Game Players label. Game Players Nintendo Guide is obviously for systems made by Nintendo and the March 1993 issue included coverage of the NES, Game Boy, and the recently released Super Nintendo. Contents includes:

    Departments

    • Editor’s Notes – This month’s letter from the editor teases events at the Winter CES which will be covered in full the following month. Star Fox and the Super FX chip were among the hot new items.
    • Hot Shots – Short game previews and other news bits this month including Star Fox, Kirby’s Dream Land, Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Cliffhanger, The Last Action Hero, Dracula, the new 3DO, Pugsley’s Scavenger Hunt and more.

    Features

    • Mega Man Mania! – Strategies for the the new Mega Man 5 for the NES, Mega Man III for the Game Boy, and some news about the upcoming Mega Man game for the Super Nintendo.
    • Hot Court Action – An article on Bulls vs. Blazers, a basketball game for the Super Nintendo.
    • Manage the Friendly Skies – Not a flight simulator but an airline simulator. Build your own airline from the ground up.
    • High Karate – An article on Electro Brain’s Best of the Best Championship Karate (but really it’s kickboxing?) for the Super Nintendo.
    • The Neo-Anarchists Guide to Shadowrun – A guide to Shadowrun, a great cyberpunk action/RPG for the Super Nintendo. There was a Genesis version as well though it was quite different.
    • Sonic Blastman: To Kill the Enemy – A side-scrolling fighting game for the Super Nintendo that is based somewhat loosely on the arcade game of the same name.
    • Trouble in Mario Land – A guide to Super Mario Land 2 for the Game Boy.
    • Ultima – The Ultimate in RPGs – Ultima comes to the Super Nintendo in the form of Ultima: The False Prophet. This is Ultima VI but the number is presumably left off since this was a stand alone game for the SNES.

    Reviews

    • Caesar’s Palace (SNES) – A casino game featuring video poker, roulette, blackjack and wheel of fortune.
    • James Bond Jr. (SNES) – An action game based on the animated series (which I never saw) of the same name.
    • Jimmy Connors Pro Tennis Tour (SNES) – A pretty good tennis game featuring singles or doubles, exhibition or tournament mode.
    • The Legend of Ghost Lion (NES) – A “below average” RPG I’ve never heard of by Kemco.
    • Wave Race (Game Boy) – A boat racing game from an overhead point of view. The best part of it is that it can be played with four players if you have the Four-Player Adapter. Probably pretty challenging to find four players to play with even then though.

    …and more!
