Chuck Rock is a fairly typical side-scrolling platform game albeit with a somewhat unique character and setting. In Chuck Rock, you take control of a cave man whose main attacks are chucking rocks at things and the belly bounce. You also have a jump kick at your disposal and can use the rocks to assist in higher jumps. You can think of Chuck as a much cruder version of Fred Flintstone.

Ultimately, Chuck’s goal is to rescue the princess…I mean rescue his beautiful wife Ophelia from the bully and her kidnapper, Garry Gritter. You’ll have to fight your way through various landscapes such as a jungle, caves, an icy mountain top, a dinosaur graveyard and other. Your main adversaries will be dinosaurs though of few of those will help you too. Watch out for raw dino-steaks to re-up your health.

Chuck Rock was initially released for the Atari ST and Amiga computers in 1991 though it was ultimately ported to a wide variety of systems. The Sega CD version was released in 1992. Chuck Rock is a pretty decent platformer with some humor. Chuck was even the mascot of Core, the developer, before Laura Croft and Tomb Raider came along. There was a sequel called Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck but this was aimed at younger audiences. There was also a spin-off racing game titled BC Racers that was pretty decent for its time. There were apparently vague plans for a Chuck Rock game on later consoles but that never happened.

This is a platformer worth playing if you enjoy these types of games. The somewhat unique setting and humor add to the enjoyability. The Amiga, Atari ST, Sega CD and Super Nintendo versions are probably the best to choose from but it was available for 8-bit systems like the Commodore 64, Sega Master System, Game Gear and Game Boy among others as well. Images above are from the Sega CD version of the game.
