  • ACE (October 1988)

    Source: ACE – Issue Number 12 – October 1988

    ACE, short for Advanced Computer Entertainment, is a computer gaming magazine that was published in the U.K. though it also had some non-gaming content. In its later days it covered only 16-bit systems but earlier on it covered a wider variety of computers. The October 1988 issue was the one year anniversary issue and includes:

    • Games Milestones – A look at some of the games that changed gaming. Some of the titles covered include Renegade, Knight Orc, Out Run, Oids, Xenon, Captain Blood, Defender of the Crown, Dungeon Master, Carrier Command, Interceptor, Leatherneck, Universal Military Simulator, Beyond Zork, Shadowgate, Tetris, Rampage, and more.
    • Pixel Profits – Part two of a series. This month the focus is on graphics and visual games design.
    • Power to the Player – Are 16-bit computers already obsolete? A look at the 32-bit Acorn Archimedes.
    • It’s Showtime – A look at the latest PC Show including a map plus a look back at the highlights of past shows going back to 1978.

    • Tricks ‘n’ Tactics – A code snippet to give you infinite lives in Oids, a playing guide for Football, a complete list of codes for Better Dead Than Alien, tons of tips for Pandora, some tips for Virus, how to get invincibility in Leatherneck, a map for Dark Side, and more.
    • Adventures – A review and detailed look at Ultima 5 for the PC, the latest in this classic RPG series, including game play tips plus reviews of Mortville Manor (Amiga, Atari ST) and Jekyll and Hyde (Spectrum, Atari ST, Commodore 64, CPC).

  • The One (January 1991)

    The One was a U.K. based magazine that generally covered 16-bit computer games. The January 1991 issue included coverage of Amiga, Atari ST and PC (DOS) games and includes:

    Regulars

    • Letters – Letters from readers criticizing recent arcade game conversions (starting with Out Run), requesting tips for The Faery Tale Adventure, correcting World War II history, asking for realistic Formula One games, and more.
    • Disk – Cover disks were included for both the Amiga and Atari ST. The Amiga disk included an extra Rick Dangerous II level while the Atari disk included a demo of Flames of Freedom and Portraiture.

    • Virtual Reality – The current state of Virtual Reality, something much talked about in the 1990s, showing up in a variety of movies and TV shows. It seems like Virtual Reality was the next big thing for 30 years.

  • The One (May 1992)

    The One is a gaming magazine that was published in the U.K. in the early 1990s. It covered multiple 16-bit platforms throughout its life, mostly the Amiga and Atari ST. However, in May 1992 it was just the Amiga. Contents includes:

    • The Disks – This magazine included cover disks and the highlights from this month include playable demos of fire and Ice and the Humans plus complete games Yelp!, Microbes and Asteroids and lots more.
    • News – Konami gets game license for Batman Returns; new Amiga 600 launches soon; game based on the movie Lawnmower Man coming soon; Alien 3 on the way; a look back at the May 1990 issue; and more.
    • The Magnificent Seven – An interview with seven of Britain’s top game developers.
    • Work in Progress – A detailed look at games currently under development including The Humans, Shadowworlds, and Aquabatics.

    • The Ultimate Games Amiga – An article on the ideal Amiga gaming setup. Must haves are an Amiga 500 with a 1MB upgrade, a second disk drive, decent joysticks (The Cruiser from Powerplay is recommended here). If you still have money leftover, then a 40 MB hard drive is nice, along with a trackball, an improved mouse, an upgraded monitor, an Amiga Action Replay, and a sound system to pipe that Amiga stereo sound through.
