    A summary for those that haven’t been keeping up with this series:

    I found a bunch of 5.25″ disks at a thrift store a number of years ago. I finally got around to acquring a 5.25″ disk drive and extracting the contents a while back. Since then I have been posting the contents here.

    Based on the contents, at least some of these disks were apparently once owned by someone named Connie A. Buys who used to run the “Close Encounters” Special Interest Group (SIG) on Delphi in the mid 1980s.

    A specific definition of this SIG was found in a previous document on one of the disks: “This SIG, known as “Close Encounters”, is a forum for the discussion of relationships that develop via computer services like the Source, CompuServe, and Delphi. Our primary emphasis is on the sexual aspects of those relationships.”

    Everything was text based from whatever terminal program you used to dial in to Delphi’s servers. Many of these disks have forum messages, e-mails and chat session logs. All of this is pre-internet stuff and I don’t know if there are any archives in existence today of what was on Delphi in the 1980s. In any case, much of this stuff would have been private at the time and some of it is quite personal.

    I’ve been splitting up the contents of this disk (descriptively labeled “File Disk”) since it contains a number of documents, some of which are pretty long. A 5.25″ floppy disk can still hold an impressive amount of info when it is just text. (see the previous parts here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10).

    The contents of this post includes the contents of a document called NEWFORUM.DOC. It appears to be a message about some new commands available on Delphi when in a Forum. It is dated October 11th and I believe this is from 1985.

         NEW Forum Commands
         From: DEB          To: ALL
     
     
       Delphi has made some (long requested) changes to the DIRECTORY command in
    the FORUM.  The two new options are a directory of a range of messages
    (specified by two numbers separated by a colon) and for messages
    containing a particular group of characters, word, or phrase in
    the subject.
     
       You can also string options together on one command, such as
     
       DIRECTORY FROM DEB TO ALL SUBJECT "new forum commands"
     
    which should list this message!
     
    In short, all the DIRectory options are:
     
    * FROM 
    * TO   
    * WAITING
    * NEW
    * SUBJECT  -- this will search for specific strings withing the
    message header itself.  Those strings with imbedded spaces need to
    be enclosed in quotation marks. Search strings which include one word
    will not need the quotes.
    * :  -- will scan a range of lines.  Reasonable abbreviations are
    allowed, such as
     
    DIR 100:200 - scans message headers for numbers 100 to 200.
    DIR :200 - lists messages below and including 200
    DIR 200  - lists messages starting with 200.
    THREAD - when used with a number or range, lists the thread containing
    the specified message.  When used alone, lists the thread containing
    the current message.  It can also be used with the SUBJECT qualifier.
     
     
       In addition to these exciting new search parameters within the DIR command
    on the FORUM, You can now also use WHO and SEND from any FORUM> prompt, just
    the same as it can be used at the *FLAGSHIP* prompt.

    The contents of this post includes the contents of a document called MINORS.DOC. It is a rather disturbing article from a local newspaper (not sure what ‘local’ is in this case…possibly Jacksonville, FL) about NAMBLA, a vile organization in my opinion but one that I believe is still around.

    This article appeared in our local paper recently and I'd like to hear
    your comments on it:
    
    "Child molesters have organized groups to promote the notion that
    childern of any age should be allowed to have sex.
    
    One of those is the North American Man/Boy Love Association in New
    York City.
    
    'They need to know there are other people who have these feelings,
    that these feelings are not bad or evil,' NAMBLA spokesman Bill
    Andriette said.
    
    A pamphlet describes the group's goals:  'We advocate changing
    existing laws so as both to protect young people from abuse and at the
    same time extend to them the right, presently enjoyed solely by
    adults, to control their own bodies...
    
    'We believe the state has no business enforcing a particular code of
    sexual morality or breaking up a mutually consensual sexual
    relationship of any kind.  We demand the release of all our brothers
    and sisters incarcerated for consensual sex with minors.'
    
    NAMBLA publishes newsletters, holds conventions and has an emergency
    defense fund to defray legal costs for members arrested for child
    molesting.
    
    Prison inmates who have been convicted of molesting or raping children
    are given free memberships and subscriptions to NAMBLA publications.
    
    Police estimate the group has 20,000 subscribers nationwide. 
    Andriette said it has only about 1,000 subscribers.  He said he is not
    a pedophile but agrees with pedophiles politically.
    
    'It's a difficult issue,'  Andriette said.  'Eight-year-olds are
    capable of consenting to sex, just as they are capable of saying
    something feels good or tastes good.  The question obviously becomes
    more difficult as the person becomes younger.
    
    'Children do have an idea of what sex is.  Children should be taught
    to say no in all situations they don't feel comfortable in.  They
    should avoid coercive situations and go along with situations that are
    pleasurable.'
    
    But for an adult to force a child into a sexual act is wrong, he said.
    
    'Clearly, a person who has intercourse with an infant, that's
    coercive.  It's not something where the child could easily express
    displeasure.'
    
    But 2-year-olds, 8-year-olds and teenagers are capable of expressing
    what they want, he said.
    
    'Some type of sexual interaction could be valid with a 2-year-old,' he
    said.  'It would be limited, but he can state whether an act is
    pleasurable or not.'"

    The contents of this post includes the contents of a document called MAIL.DOC. It appears to be a screen log of Connie checking her e-mail, of which there are a few, and then the more interesting part…she issues a search commmand that appears to search Delphi for people with the string “psyc” in the occupation portion of their profile. What follows is a list of people who are psychiatrists or psychologists along witht their profiles which include various interesting things. Personally, I liked seeing what computers they all used :).

       which offers data on parapsychological issues.  This includes
       astral projection; aura perceptions; nonlinear time studies;
       altered states including hypnosis and other trance states;

    OCCUPATION: P r e s e n t  W o r k:  Closed my private practice of
       marriage and family counseling in late 1984 to enter
       semi-retirement and teach. Teach for an extension of a small
       college, Central Texas.  Teach:  remedial math and English;
       freshman and sophomore English; lower division math and
       mathematical statistics; computer orientation courses; general
       psychology; military (organizational) sociology; military
       psychology; BASIC programming.  Am also computer trainer for the
       Comanche Indian Nation for whom I teach computer application
       courses in word processing, basic programming, accounting and
       business math, often in 30 hour a week courses which last six
       months.
    PHILOSOPHY:   A d v i s o r y   P h i l o s o p h y: Since you may be
       consulting with me this outlines the philosophy of my advisory. I
       conclude that most people are dominated by emotional signals
       generated by their unconscious, obviously beyond their awareness.
       Generally such create no problem.  These stimulations are a
       survival of the physical evolution chain which are further
       compromised by our present culture. Historically man has called
       that "bad" behavior a "sin" -- but I consider it as understandable
       as the fact that we have two legs.  We had to be this way to
       physically survive, but now we must adapt to more logical control
       to survive. We continue to have a chance to evolve beyond
       domination by our emotions which is a function of my advising
       philosophy.   I'm a registered with ARE and will advise within
