    Mecarobot Golf (SNES, Toho, 1993)

    http://darth-azrael.tumblr.com/post/165385492327/worldofboxart-box-art-win-2-mecarobot-golf

If you like golf games, there were a number of good ones released for the Super Nintendo. This really isn’t one of them. Mecarobot Golf features an odd story about a robot who is discriminated against on the golf course. Somebody purchases Eagle (the robot) and builds a course for him to practice on. It is up to you to determine if robots or humans are the better golfers.

The Sound is pretty minimal and while the graphics feature a couple of interesting effects, overall they are pretty subpar. In Japan this game was endorsed by a famous Japanese golfer but when it was released in 1993 in North America, the robot got all of the credit. It really isn’t a terrible game but there were just so many better ones.

I don’t think this game had any sequels or any subsequent releases so if you want to play it you’ll have to break out your Super Nintendo and find an original cart. Or just resort to emulation. But unless you just want to see how the story ends, you will probably be better off picking from one of the better alternatives.

  • Nintendo Power (February 1993)

    001

Source: Nintendo Power – Issue Number 45 – February 1993

Nintendo Power was never one of my favorite magazines but it has a great nostalgia factor nonetheless. In early 1993, it was still covering the original NES as well as the Super Nintendo and Game Boy. The February 1993 issue includes:

    Super NES

    • Cybernator – A decent shooter from Konami.
    • Harley’s Humongous Adventure – A platform game from Hi-Tech Expressions that seems to be oriented towards the younger crowd.
    • Wing Commander – Port of the PC space combat sim.
    • Jeopardy! – The classic game show starring Alex Trebek.
    • The Addams Family: Pugsley’s Scavenger Hunt – Platform game featuring the Addams Family.

    Game Boy

    • Darkwing Duck – A pretty straightforward conversion of the NES game.
    • Spot: The Cool Adventure – Platform game featuring the 7-Up mascot.
    • Alien 3 – Horror themed Action/RPG based on the movie of the same name.
    • The Ren & Stimpy Show – Action/adventure game featuring the famous duo from the Nickelodeon cartoon.
    • Rampart – Classic action/strategy game now for the small screen (though it’s better on the Lynx).
    • The Little Mermaid – Very similar to the NES version. Far too easy for hard core gamers but fans of the movie will like it.

    NES

    • Zen Intergalactic Ninja – Beat-em-up with a mixture of side-scrolling and isometric game play.
    • Bomberman II – This sequel from Hudson Soft is just as fun as all the other Bomberman games.
    • Tiny Toon Adventure 2 – A great game for younger players based on a very underrated cartoon series.
    • Eon Man – Sci-fi themed platform game.

  • Super Strike Eagle (Super Nintendo)

    SUPER STRiKE EAGLE
    MicroProse
    Super NES
    1993

    http://darth-azrael.tumblr.com/post/163968478892/videogameads-super-strike-eagle-microprose-super

F-15 Strike Eagle was a combat flight simulator developed for the Commodore 64, Atari 8-bit and Apple II and eventually ported to other systems as well. This is not that game. Whereas F-15 Strike Eagle was much more of a true combat flight simulator, Super Strike Eagle is a somewhat simplified game with more of an arcade feel and except for the general theme, isn’t really related to the original or its sequels.

Super Strike Eagle was released by MicroProse for the Super Nintendo in 1993. In it, the player plays the role of a U.N. pilot attacking targets in various rogue nations, depending on the mission, in order to bring them back into line with the U.N. Despite the improved graphics, it really isn’t as good or as in depth as the original game. Still, it’s a decent game and ok for a bit of fun if you’re looking for a combat flight game on your Super Nintendo. Those looking for a true sim probably shouldn’t be looking on a console anyway, even today.

As far as I know, there were no sequels or re-releases of this game and it wasn’t available on any other system. If you are looking for this particular iteration of Strike Eagle, then a real SNES and cart or an emulator are your only choices.

I really hate how so many games on the Super Nintendo were preceded by the word “Super”…
