One Response to Metal Gear Solid (PlayStation)

  1. Metal Gear Solid is a 3D action adventure game released by Konami for the PlayStation in 1998. This was a hugely successful game, selling more than six million copies. It spawned an expanded version on the PlayStation and PC (Metal Gear Solid: Integral), a remake on the GameCube (Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes) and a large number of sequels, prequels and spin-offs since. Metal Gear Solid is generally credited with popularizing the “stealth” genre.

Given the huge popularity of Metal Gear Solid and the timing of its release (many years after the previous game in the series), you might think that this was the first game in the series if you didn’t know any better. However, the first game in the series was actually released way back in 1987 (hence the 1987 copyright date on the tite screen above). It was originally released for the MSX2 in Japan (the MSX was an 8-bit line of computers popular in Japan). It was then ported to the NES in modified form which is where most people would probably know it from. The NES version got mixed but mostly positive reviews and sold very well in North America. However, the MSX2 version is generally considered to be superior. This game was also ported to the Commodore 64 and PC (DOS).

A sequel was released in 1990 in North America on the NES entitled “Snake’s Revenge” and a separate sequel entitled “Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake” was released in Japan for the MSX2. Metal Gear Solid was released 8 years later as a sequel to the MSX2 game.

The two NES games were 2D action games with a top down point of view. Stealth was important in these games as well. Metal Gear Solid, despite being 3D, kept this top down view in part. Despite the vast differences, playing the NES predecessors probably wouldn’t feel completely unfamiliar.
