Sega PC is Sega’s branding for games it releases on the PC. These are usually ports of console based games, specifically Sega console games back when they still made consoles. This ad from 1995 includes Ecco the Dolphin, Comix Zone and Tomcat Alley.

Ecco the Dolphin was originally released for the Sega Genesis and Sega CD. The PC (Windows) version is a port of the Sega CD version with higher resolution graphics. In 2014, an unofficial fixed and enhanced version that made it compatible with newer Windows versions was released. If you can find it, this is probably really the best version of the game despite not quite having the convenience of a console game.

Comix Zone was a comic book themed action game released for both the Sega Genesis and PC in 1995. The PC version was also re-released in 2010 via Steam. There’s nothing wrong with the PC version but I would probably prefer to play this one on the Genesis.

Tomcat Alley is a full motion video game that was released for the Sega CD in 1994. It was ported to Windows a little later in 1995. The Windows version has better quality video but I was never a fan of FMV games. At all. If you are a fan then go for the Windows version but I would skip this one.

Incidentally, these were all Windows 3.1 games which were pretty rare really. It may be difficult to get these working on more recent Windows versions except for the unofficial hack of Ecco mentioned above. The above ad is from the November 1995 issue of Next Generation magazine.

Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future was actually the fourth game in the Ecco the Dolphin series though it was more a remake than a sequel. It was developed by Sega and released for the Dreamcast in 2000. The main advancement in regards to this game was the move from 2D to 3D. Previous games in the Ecco series were released for the Sega Genesis and Sega CD.

The game encompasses a large span of time and is set in the distant future. Dolphins are as intelligent as humans and are at different point allies or enemies of human. As Ecco, the player is always attempting to unite them and save the earth from various threats, the biggest of which is an alien invasion.

This is a pretty unique game as are all of the games in the Ecco series. It also received very good reviews. As a first party Sega title it was initially released only on the Dreamcast but as Sega eventually dropped support for the Dreamcast, it was later also released on the PS2 (in 2002). A sequel was planned for the Dreamcast but was never completed because of the Dreamcast’s early demise. However, a partially completed copy has made its way into the wild.

Above is a magazine ad for the original Dreamcast release.
