  • 50 Cent Comics – The Magdalena #2

Next up from my 50 cent comic book score at MegaCon is The Magdalena #2. This is an Image title that I’m not particularly familiar with. It seems to follow a DaVinci Code type plot line where Jesus has descendants. In this case, the descendants of Jesus apparently have always sacrificed themselves battling demons. This issue is from 2010.

Even though this is only issue #2, some backstory is still provided. Apparently the son of Satan has been born. That can’t be good…

Apparently the virtue of modesty and demon slaying don’t go well together. I suppose the artwork would be less interesting that way. But it ends up she has some pretty awesome looking armor. She just isn’t ready yet here. Good thing she was at least wearing underwear…

Magdalena is apparently not fond of the pope and isn’t enthusiastic about killing a kid but she ultimately agrees to work with him. Besides, she had this convenient outfit ready and it would be a shame if it didn’t get some use. I suspect it probably works a little better for demon slaying than what she was wearing earlier.

Not many ads in this particular issue and since this is only from 2010 they aren’t as fun to look back at anyway…

  • 50 Cent Comics – X-Treme X-Men #32

Next up from the batch of 50 cent comics I picked up at MegaCon in Orlando this year is X-Treme X-Men #32. Back when I bought comics on a regular basis, The X-Men titles were among my favorites. However, this was before X-Treme X-Men came along so I’m not really sure how that one fits in. I’m not sure this cover really has anything to do with the story.

Anyway, the story involves a woman trying to blow up a club full of mutants for some past abuse she suffered. This issue is from December 2003 but you can get a pretty good idea of the time period from the…

…video game advertisements like this one for Soul Calibur II for the GameCube. The only 3D fighting game series I really played and liked.

Discrete sound cards aren’t as big of a deal as they used to be but the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 was one I used to really want. I always contented myself with on-board audio though. I don’t think I really had a discrete sound card since whatever Sound Blaster variant I had that came with my Pentium II from Gateway 2000. And that Sound Blaster 16 ASP I had for my 486 DX2-66 back in the day was awesome for its time. I still kind of want one of those Audigy 2s though…

Another video game ad to date this issue. This time for a game I never heard of for the original XBox.

  • 50 Cent Comics – Avengers #255

I’ve been attending MegaCon in Orlando since 1999. Mostly I go for the panels but I’ll usually pick up at least one thing in the show room as a souvenir before I go home. Often, I look for cheap comics. This year I found an especially good deal as someone was trying to unload everything they had left at 50 cents each or even cheaper if you wanted a whole long box full. Obviously there’s not going to be mint copies of key issues here but it’s fun to grab a bunch of old comics to flip through and read. Especially at less than the 35 year old cover price.

First up is issue number #255 of avengers from May 1985. You can tell a comic book’s age by its cover price. 65 cents is slightly before my time as the first ones I remember buying were 75 cents.

Anyway, some of the story elements in this issue will be familiar to those who know the Avengers only from the MCU. Vision is turning himself in after nearly destroying the world by taking over the world’s computers and Captain Marvel is off to investigate the derelict ship of Thanos but runs into some opposition when she gets there. Captain Marvel has gone through iterations and this iteration is somewhat different than the Captain Marvel you may be familiar with in the movies.

Of course it’s also fun to go back and look at the ads. Bonkers was a popular 1980s candy I remember liking. I don’t know exactly when you stopped being able to find it in stores…

Did anyone every win these prizes or cash (from selling stuff I think) that used to be advertised in every comic book for about 40 years?
