  • Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition (1996)

Speaking of companies unable to recapture past successes, Apogee Software was never really able to surpass the fame it had with Duke Nukem 3D.

At the time, Apogee published software under many different names depending on the genre of the game. 3D Realms was the name created for the burgeoning field of first person shooters, which became so dominant that Apogee changed its name to 3D Realms, and distributes software under that name to this day.

  • Magic: The Gathering – Battlegrounds

Released November 2003 – blast from the past.

Battlegrounds is a real time strategy video game based on Magic: The Gathering collectible card game, though with many fundamental differences. The game is based on the creation of heroes and mages that summon forth powerful monsters, spells, and abilities to defeat the enemy duelist. Duelists learn new magical spells by completing the campaign, with more and more spell books becoming available as the player progresses. Each spell is separated into one of 5 colors, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
