The X-Files – 6×13 – “Agua Mala”

In this Monster of the Week episode, the agents are summoned to Southwest Florida in the middle of a hurricane to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a family. Darren McGavin guest stars as Arthur Dales, the first agent that looked into the X-Files and the man who called the agents to investigate. Arthur had received a frantic phone call from Sarah Shipley of the family that ultimately disappeared saying that her husband had been attacked by something with tentacles.

Overall, this was a decent episode. The atmosphere was dark and wet as you would expect in a hurricane and the literal monster was suitably creepy as it was nearly invisible in water and essentially absorbed its victims. It was somewhat disappointing that Darren McGavin played such a small role as the other guest actors were merely average by comparison. However, Mulder and Scully were excellent as usual and at the end of the day that is what is really important. At the end, as Mulder was close to death after being attacked, both Mulder and Scully came to the near simultaneous conclusion that fresh water was lethal to the creature just in time for Mulder to be revived.

Overall, I would give this episode 3.5/5 stars. It was an average to above average monster of the week episode. Creepy but not quite scary and a bit contrived in places (mainly at the end) but solid nonetheless.
