  • 50-Cent Comics: C-23 #7

At MegaCon this year, I picked up a number of cheap comics. Most were 50 cents, some were $1. There might not be any spectacular gems here, but for that price it is hard to find a bad buy. I picked up a variety of older and newer titles. I could have picked up a whole box at an even bigger discount…but I didn’t really want that many and I certainly didn’t want to carry them around.

Ok, so admittedly I picked this issue of C-23 up because it had Jim Lee’s name on the cover. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that Jim Lee had anything do do with the art or the writing. Supposedly, he is the “creator” though. I guess he came up with the idea? The series is also from a time not long after I had kind of gotten out of comic book buying (even now, I just grab things once in a while…like when I go to MegaCon) and I really liked Image comics back in the day…

Unfortunately, this is one of those series that it is a little difficult to figure out exactly what is going on from just one issue. This is issue number 7 of an 8 issue series and was published in October 1998. Apparently there is a war going on between a “good” race and an “evil” race and the savior of the story (born of both races of course) has just been rescued from some kind of prison…by a possible lover?…and made at least a partial escape. There doesn’t really seem to be much more to the story than that but then again, I only read one out of eight issues.

Apparently, this comic book was popular enough to spawn a collectible card game (now out of print) published by Wizards of the Coast. Then again, maybe the card game was planned from the beginning on the strength of the Jim Lee and Image Comics names. I am not left with the impression that either was a great success.
