This episode fits within the mythology category but it is quite a bit different than most. While looking through Roswell newspapers from the 1940s, Mulder finds a picture of a young Arthur Dales (the original X-Files investigator), Josh Exley (a talented black minor league baseball player), and the shape-shifting alien bounty hunter. Mulder sets off in search of Dales to find out what happened.
Most of the rest of the episode is a flash-back to 1947 as told by Dales. Dales is initially assigned to protect Exley presumably because of death threats from the KKK. Exley turns out to be an alien in disguise (as all the truly great players are) and it isn’t just the KKK that is after him. The alien bounty hunter was also sent to either bring him back or kill him. However, Exley has fallen in love with the game of baseball and with being human and does not want to return.
This was a very good episode despite having a minimum amount of Mulder and even less Scully (who was only around at the very beginning and the very end of the episode). The story was both funny and sad and it was very well done. Other than the stars of the show not being in it much, I have no real complaints and the rest of the cast did an excellent job. 4/5 stars.
