  • John McCain rips Tea Party, Fox News, calls Hillary Clinton a ‘rock star’

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., isn’t making many friends among the conservative wing of the Republican Party these days. In an interview published Tuesday at the New Republic, he slammed the Tea Party, called Fox News “schizophrenic” on certain issues and called Hillary Clinton a “rock star.”

He also said that in a presidential matchup between Hillary Clinton and Rand Paul, he would have a tough time deciding who to support.

“I think she did a fine job,” he said of Clinton’s performance as Secretary of State despite the scandal surrounding the Benghazi terror attack.

“She’s a rock star. She has, maybe not glamour, but certainly the aura of someone widely regarded throughout the world. I do think it is interesting that the issues where John Kerry is engaging is where Hillary Clinton did not engage in, that those decisions were left to the White House and the National Security Council,” he added.

“When Hillary Clinton versus Rand Paul occurs in 2016, I guess you are going to have to decide who to vote for, huh?” the New Republic asked McCain.

“It’s gonna be a tough choice,” he said, laughing.

He clarified his remark, saying Paul “represents a segment of the GOP, just like his father. And I think he is trying to expand that, intelligently, to make it larger.”

As CNN observed, however, McCain blasted Paul over his 13-hour filibuster, calling him and Sen Ted Cruz, R-Texas, “wacko birds.”

McCain also praised Obama, saying he has “grown” in office, especially since the president has reached out to him and Sen. Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who is often at McCain’s side on issues like immigration. McCain praised Graham, saying he “is like a son to me.”

  • Friction between McCain, Paul underscores divide within Republican Party

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and Arizona Sen. John McCain are once again banging heads – this time over whether to arm Syrian rebels – in the latest dispute that underscores a divide in the GOP and intensifies the fight over what the party will represent in 2016 and beyond.

Paul, a first-term senator and Tea Party favorite surging in popularity, took the latest shot by opposing aid to the rebels – a key part of McCain’s plan to end the two-year Syrian civil war in which 70,000 civilians and others have been killed.

“It is very clear that any attempt to aid the Syrian rebels would be complicated and dangerous, precisely because we don’t know who these people are,” Paul wrote in an opinion piece earlier this week. “The situation in Syria is certainly dire. … Al Qaeda is making confirmed inroads into the country. No one wants to see Syria become a bastion of extremism. But like other American interventions in the past, U.S. involvement could actually help the extremists.”

But McCain, fresh off a secret trip to Syria, on Friday upped his call for intervention — telling the Associated Press the opposition needs heavy weapons.

McCain and Paul split last month as members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee when McCain, elected to Congress in 1983, voted in favor of the Syria Transition Act, which calls for “limited lethal and non-lethal assistance and training to vetted Syrian groups.”

Paul voted against the bill and warned in his op-ed Thursday for CNN that the U.S. now “has reason to believe” that Libyan rebels who helped overthrow dictator Moammar Gadhafi and whom McCain appeared to supported in 2011 were in fact connected to al Qaeda and other Islamic extremists.

The bill passed by a 13-5 vote.

  • Did Senator McCain Violate NDAA by Hanging Out with Syrian Rebels?

There are further reports that most of our aid to the region is going to “hard-line Islamic jihadists.” In fact, the same day President Obama announced our recognition of the opposition, rebel groups across Syria signed a petition pledging allegiance to the Jihad and asking America by name not to intervene. It’s hard to imagine that twelve years after 9/11, Senator McCain would be calling for US foreign and military aid be given to “the Jihad.”

Interestingly enough, this is the same Senator McCain who championed NDAA 2012, which gives our government the right to indefinitely detain Americans for doing exactly what he did: supporting elements aligned with al-Qaeda.
