Ice Climber for NES

Posted on May 12, 2011 by Matt Paprocki

There’s a secret underground operation going on within Ice Climber. Toppi’s, furry, white Yetis, casually walk across the ice, avoiding certain doom as you try and smash them with a mallet. However, they also perish if there’s a hole in the ice they don’t see, fear and keen eye sight causing them to quickly turn back, pull out a brick of ice, and fill the gap. This must mean that off-screen, there’s an underground ice factory churning this stuff out to safely pass left to right to get… well, to the other side actually. To them, it’s obviously important.

It turns the two lead characters, Popo and Nana, into jerks. They want an eggplant suspended above the stages. Worries about sustenance in a world where you’re continually trapped in an icy pit of doom aside, Toppi’s are only out on a simple left to right journey. Who are we to invade their homes? On second thought, since the Japanese version contains baby seals, maybe smashing the brains in of a yeti isn’t so bad after all.
