  • Digital Archaeology: Gateway DX4300-11

I know I’ve said it before, but once upon a time, Gateway (AKA Gateway 2000) used to make awesome systems. Before I started building my own systems, I had a 1993 era 486 from Gateway 2000 and a 1997 era Pentium II from them as well and they were both great computers. At one point i was seriously considering buying one of their Destination systems that came along a couple of years later. I think it was sometime during the Pentium 4 era maybe that they really started going downhill. In 2004, Gateway bought eMachines and not long after that it seemed like most Gateway PCs were on the same level as eMachines in terms of components and build quality. Things did not improve when Acer bought Gateway in 2007 and ultimately the brand was quietly retired. A sad end for a once great company. It’s not a unique story of course, Compaq suffered pretty much the same fate.

Anyway, this particular Gateway with the pretty generic model name of DX4300-11 was being sold in 2009. This was a couple of years after being purchased by Acer so in my mind, this is really an Acer computer. I believe the motherboard is even made by Acer. In includes a Phenom II processor and 8 GB of RAM. I guess its most unique features were the angled card reader at the top and an included TV tuner card. Specs include:

    • CPU: Phenom II X4 805 @ 2.5GHz
    • RAM: 8 GB PC2-6400 (400 MHz)
    • Video: Radeon HD 5670 (upgraded from on-board Radeon HD 3200)

For more complete specs, check out the output of HWiNFO or CPU-Z.

Physically, it has a sleek black theme that was popular at the time. It looks nice enough but isn’t very distinctive. As far as the components go, they went pretty cheap. The motherboard features AM2+ support. The processor itself is an AM3 processor but these worked in AM2+ boards though with DDR2 memory instead of DDR3. I believe this was the lowest end quad core Phenom II processor and it was released roughly a year before this PC was being sold. The motherboard featured the 780G chipset which includes AMD Radeon HD 3200 (RS780) integrated video. As far as integrated video goes, I guess it wasn’t that bad. However, the cheapest discrete video card at the time was likely many times better. I’ve added a Radeon HD 5670 just to try out.

Upgradeability of OEM systems is often limited, difficult and/or impractical. This machine is certainly no exception. The CPU is upgradeable but you are limited to 95 watt processors so not just any AM2+/AM3 processor will work. Still, there are some six core Phenom IIs that may work. I believe the RAM is maxed out at 8 GB. At least that is the max that is officially supported. There is an x16 PCI-E slot for a video card upgrade but you are really limited unless you also upgrade the power supply which is only 300 watt. The HD 5670 i added requires no external power so it is ok. The good news is that a standard ATX power supply is used so it is fairly easily replaced. In theory, you can even upgrade the motherboard but I’m not sure if the front panel connectors are standard or not.

Reviews at the time basically said that this was an ok computer but was more expensive that similar models from other vendors. It seems that Gateway was trying to appeal to customers who wanted TV capability in their PC by including a TV tuner card. A very generic and seemingly obscure TV tuner card I might add.

I probably won’t end up keeping this machine. Gateway was my favorite PC maker back in the day but ones from this era just make me sad. However, for now, when it is running it crunches tasks for BOINC. It can still crunch tasks for all of the projects I participate in including Einstein@home, Milkyway@home, Asteroids@home, Universe@home, Rosetta@home, and World Community Grid.

  • Digital Archaeology: Codex (Floppy Disk) #10 (part 13)

A summary for those that haven’t been keeping up with this series:

I found a number of 5.25″ disks at a thrift store a number of years ago. I finally got around to acquiring a 5.25″ disk drive and extracting the contents a while back. Since then I have been posting the contents here.

Based on the contents, at least some of these disks were apparently once owned by someone named Connie who used to run the “Close Encounters” Special Interest Group (SIG) on Delphi in the mid 1980s.

A specific definition of this SIG was found in a document on one of the disks: “This SIG, known as ‘Close Encounters’, is a forum for the discussion of relationships that develop via computer services like the Source, CompuServe, and Delphi. Our primary emphasis is on the sexual aspects of those relationships.”

This service was text based and was accessed via whatever terminal program you used on your computer to dial in to Delphi’s servers. Many of these disks have forum messages, e-mails and chat session logs. All of this is pre-internet stuff and I don’t know if there are any archives in existence today of what was on Delphi in the 1980s. In any case, much of this stuff would have been private at the time and probably wouldn’t be in such archives even if they existed.

This post includes the contents of OMNITERM.RCV dated October 27th, 1985. It appears to be a log capture from the terminal of a user navigating logging on to Delphi, reading mail and performing other activities. Some of the contents has shown up in other files but what makes this interesting is the sort of start to end interaction with the system. A snippet of what “going online” was like in 1985.

    See the previous post here.

    WOW!

You are presenting a chalanging question!

I guess the first thing that comes to mind that I would share is that
anything as intimate as sexual positions must be the mutual adventure
of BOTH partners and never be something imposed by one on the other.

The next thing is that whatever objection one partner has to a
particular sexual position, act, or anything shared that objection
should be recognized as a valid one and that objection answered by
BOTH and an agreement hopefully reached!

Now for the question as to positions NOT liked.

I am going to NOT be specific but say that there several positions I
find unfavorable for reasons of discomfort, <physical AND
psychological> not expressive of love and passion, or just not
    possible for me to perform!

In all of the cases above I feel justified in my objections and trust
my partner will be respective of my objections.

In my history such objections were sometimes NOT respected and that
can cause something that may be between or a combination of
humiliation and pain to my person or ego.

I hope I NEVER cause that discomfort for my Love!

I hope that posses some answer or support for you and anyone else.

I've been very lucky! My partner and I have the mutual respect and
     love for each other that
allows us to talk about *EVERYTHING*
including our deepest feelings about the mutual adventure we are
     sharing.

Love, support, understanding and communication between lovers is so
important but too often we get so wrapped up in other things that
this all gets put on hold.

In this particular incident I have to admit that I *thought* I was
doing very well in keeping the real reason for objecting to various
positions well hidden. You can imagine my shock when his comment hit
the nail square on the head! Now that I've acknowledged the real
reason, he and I can go on together to hopefully overcome this.

  • Digital Archaeology: Codex (Floppy Disk) #10 (part 11)

This post includes the contents of NEWCONTS.DOC dated October 20th, 1985. It is a message containing an update set of rules for a sexual trivia contest being run on the Close Encounters SIG.

    See the previous post here.

2 20-OCT BRIEF CONTEST RULES AMENDED

                            Close Encounters Sig
                        Sexual Trivia Contest Rules.

This month in Close Encounters, we will be starting
a 'sexual trivia' contest with the official questions
and answers being taken from the game of the same name
            and other sources.

Each month on the second Sunday, we will post in the
forum under the 'playground' topic, the 10 questions
            for the month.

All members of the Close Encounters Sig are eligible to
play regardless of when they joined except for the sig
managers, sysops, and members of their immediate families.

Answers to the questions are to be sent to LADYLOVE
via dmail only. Any answers <replies> posted in the
forum section will be automatically dis-qualified and
deleted. If you have trouble sending mail to LADYLOVE,
you may send your entry to any sig manager/sysop.

The winner will be the first person to get either all the
questions correctly answered, or the most correct answers.

You may answer any or all of the questions at any time up until
midnight of the second Saturday following the posting of the
questions, however, the winner <and runner up> will both be
determined by the date/time stamp on the mail file listing for
the last entry. The decision of the judges will be final.

                            Restrictions do apply

We would expect that if you have access to the game 'Sexual
Trivia', that you will dis-qualify yourself from participating
since this will give you an unfair advantage over others who
do not have the game or access to it.

In an effort to keep the game interesting and competitive,
and as fair as possible, the winner of one game will be asked
not to participate in the next months game only.

Of course there will be prizes.

Otherwise why have the contest at all? The winners will
receive a payment to their Delphi accounts of $1.00 for each
correct <or most nearly correct as determined by the judges>
            answer from SLG ASSOCIATES.

The runner-up in each months contest will receive a prize
of $4.00 also paid to their account.

                               The winning answers.

The winning answers along with the official correct answers
and the names of both the winner and runner-up will be posted
in the forum section as soon as possible after the current
            contest.

                                    Disclaimer

The above contest rules are subject to change without notice
as is the value and method of issue of prizes. SLG Associates
warrants only that all questions and answers will be exactly
as they are presented in the sources of such information and
will not be responsible for the accuracy of such sources.

Also, SLG Associates responsibility for collection and
accounting of valid entries will extend only to such
entries actually received via the electronic mail facility
of Delphi in accordance with the rules stated above.
