        Biography

        Robert was called Master of Sempill. He was the eldest son and apparent heir of Robert Sempill, 3rd Lord Sempill and his first wife Isabel Hamilton, daughter of Sir William Hamilton of Sanquhar.[1][2][3]

        He was taken hostage during the 'Rough Wooing' and released in a hostage exchange for John Lutrell.[4] He defended, with his brother Andrew, and lost Castle Semple when beseiged by the Congregation in Oct 1560.[5]

        He married first first Elizabeth Hamilton on 27 May 1543.[1] They had no issue.

        He married second Barbara Preston, daughter of Archibald Preston of Valleyfield, [1] They had issue:

        Robert, his heir who succeeded his grandfather, anno 1571, and was 4th Lord Semple.[1]
        Thomas, of Greenside[1][6]
        Robert died died before 16 December 1569, before the decease of his father so he never became Lord Semple so that that his son, Robert, became the 4th Lord Semple.

        Research Notes
        The birth date is not recorded. We know that he was the eldest son and that Grizzel was the eldest daughter. Unfortunately, it is not clear which is the eldest child. Grizzels year of birth is estimated to be 1525 (or earlier). His father, Robert, was born before 1501 and the legal age for marriage of males was 14 so that his marriage was not much earlier than 1515 and the first child born no earlier than 1520. From the 1543 marriage contract, one can infer that he was born no later than 1529 given a mean of Jun 1524.
        On 27th May 1549, Sir John Muir of Caldwell, five of his brothers, and twenty-six others were convicted of invading Robert, Master of Sempill, for his murder, of forethought felony. The Master of Sempill afterwards married Barbara Preston, daughter of Archibald Preston of Vallyfield, and he predeceased his father, Lord Sempill, in 1569, leaving a widow and son. In 1573, Lord Sempill entered into a bond of manrent with 36 noblemen and gentlemen to defend his oe the future Lord Semple, a boy of nine years of age, by assisting him with their bodies and guids. Lord Sempill died in 1574. Barbara Preston, the son's widow, afterwards married Robert Mure, eldest son of Sir John Mure, who had pursued her late husband to kill him.[7]
        On the 11th June 1550, Lord Sempill slew William, Lord Crichton, of Sanquhar, in the palace of the Earl of Arran, Duke of Chatelrault, and Lord Governor, of Scotland, Edinburgh, and he was apprehended and imprisoned for the crime. He would have been executed, if it had not been for the entreaties of his daughter, Lady Cathes, commonly called Lady Gilston, with the Archbishop of Saint Andrews, with whom she was living in concubinage, to influence his brother, the Duke, who came down upon the family of Lord Chrichton, to intercede for a remission of the crime. On 10th September following, his Lordship obtained the pardon of Queen Dowager, Mary of Guise, the Regent, which gave great offence to the Reformers.[7]
        Robert was NOT the poet of that name. Neither the 3rd lord Sempill nor his son Robert, Master of Sempill, nor the 4th Lord Sempill. [3]
        The 1st Lord Sempill is entombed in the Castle Sempill Collegiate Church and it is also the burial site for Gabriel Sempill and a couple of 19th-century additions. It does not contain the bodies of Robert or his immediate family with this Find A Grave memorial[8] to the contrary notwithstanding.
        There is a Robert Sempill who graduated with an M.A. for the University of Glasgow in 1549.[9] Perhaps Robert's 1543 marriage contract leads one to think these are two separate men who simply share a name but the contrary is not out of the question.
