The chorus of love and laughter was one voice short on January 6, 2023, with the loss of Shirley Dowell Wilson. Though Shirley’s homemade sweet tea and mashed potatoes were legendary, they were no match for her effervescent personality; inviting every walk of life into her home for a hearty helping of friendship, community, and above all else, laughter.

Born in Harned, KY, her family moved to Irvington, KY, where she was a cheerleader and a class leader for Irvington High School. Married to her late husband and avid University of Kentucky fan, Pelham “Sam” Wilson in 1954, Shirley & Pelham ultimately moved to Louisville, KY in 1971 - which would be their home for the next 47 years. She brought her spit-fire energy and her penchant for order and organization to businesses including Olin Chemical Co., Guerdon Industries, and Canteen Corporation, from which she retired. Throughout her time in Louisville, Shirley was highly involved in her beloved church, St. Mark United Methodist Church, and was a central figure to her community of family friends and coworkers, always sure to put a smile on your face through her infectious humor.

Beloved wife of the late Pelham J. Wilson, Shirley leaves behind her cherished daughter, Stephanie Cummings and her husband, Mark Cummings. She was the best “Mamaw” to McKinsey and Mindy Cummings; favorite Aunt to Belinda Peebles, Brad Dowell, David A. Dowell, Paul Dowell, Nancy King, and Cheryl Harris; dear sister-in-law of Paul (Becky)Wilson; adored great aunt, cousin, and friend of many. She is preceded in death by her parents, John A. Dowell and Louise (nee Kerr) Dowell; siblings, Ray B. (Peggy) Dowell, William “Billy” (Natalie) Dowell, and Bobbie (Dottie) Dowell.

We will Celebrate Shirley’s Life with the same vim and vigor she brought to all of us! Wear your brightest colors and join us in sharing your cherished memories! The visitation/reception will be held Friday, January 20, 2023 at Tway House (10235 Timberwood Circle, Jeffersontown, KY 40223) from 2:00pm until 3:30pm, followed by a celebration of life at 3:45pm.
