Narrative

Lady Margaret Mowbray, Duchess of Norfolk, m--Sir Robert Howard, son of Sir John Howard (she was sister of John, Lord Mowbray, who m--Katherine Nevill, dau--of Sir Ralph Nevill, Earl of Westmoreland (E. S. Britton's Nevill-Tilghman Line). She was the dau--of that famous Thomas de Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk and Earl Marshall of England, whose historic quarrel with Henry of Bolingbroke, afterwards Henry IV, King of England, led to his banishment for life. Duke Thomas Mowbray, father of Lady Margaret, stood at the head of the English Baronage, as the heir of the Bigods, Warrennes, and Mowbrays, and the gr. grandson and representative of Thomas de Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk, and Earl Marshall, son of Edward I, King of England by Margaret of France, dau--of King Philip le Hardi. His proud, half savage character is familiar to all students of Richard II's reign, and though he died in exile, and comparative poverty abroad, his widow and children had succeeded in maintaining their place, among the Nobility, and were in a fair way to recover all his estates, and forfeited dignities. On the mother's side the future wife of Sir Robert Howard was little less nobly descended. Eliz., Duchess of Norfolk, was the dau--and heir of Sir Rich. Fitz-Alan, the puissant Earl of Arundel and Earl of Surrey, a descendant of William d'Albini, Earl of Arundel, who m--Queen Adeliza of Brabant. By a 2nd alliance with a Fitz-Alan heiress, the representation of that great race was eventually to pass into the possession of the Howards; as the Duchess Eliz, inherited Framlingham Castle, in Suffolk, and living there with her daus--when Sir Robert Howard came a wooing, flushed with his victories in France and honored with the King's special favor. They were m--1420, as their only son was born Jan., 1421; there were also two daus--Margt. Howard, who m--Sir Thos. Daniel, and Katherine Howard, who m--as his 2nd wife Sir Edward Nevill Lord Abergavenny, K. G. (who m--1st Eliz. Beauchamp, dau--of Richard, E arl of Worcester and Baron Bergavenny) (the direct Nevill Line to E. S. Britton).
