I did a quick bit of research on the battle of Long Cane mentioned in our email correspondence below, and I find it was actually on 12 and not 2 December 1780--which makes it all the more plausible, I think, to suppose Samuel Kerr may have been wounded in the battle and then have died of his wounds in 1781.

More than that, histories show that Elijah Clarke led the American forces in this battle, and as you're reminded me, David Kerr's Revolutionary pension claim indicates he served under Capt. Samuel Kerr in a unit commanded by Col. Elijah Clarke. I would say Samuel died sometime between 12 Dec. 1780 and early 1781, very likely at home at Long Cane.
