Ron Paul dominates Newt Gingrich in Cedar Valley Tea Party straw poll

Ron Paul (R-TX), a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, dominated former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in the Cedar Valley Tea Party straw poll Tuesday night, Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reports. Mr. Paul pulled in 37 out of 60 votes cast in the Cedar Valley Tea Party straw poll, while Mr. Gingrich received only 5 out of the 60 votes cast for a third place finish. Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum finished in second place with 9 out of the 60 votes cast.

This was the Cedar Valley Tea Party’s first presidential straw poll. According to the organization’s website, the Cedar Valley Tea Party strives to “convey meaningful conservative change at the local, state, and national levels by educating, motivating and informing the citizens of Iowa about relevant social and political issues affecting them today and in the future.”

Following Saturday’s GOP debate in Iowa, Mr. Paul won a Drake University online straw poll of 1,223 students. Mr. Paul pulled in 35 percent of the votes to lead former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney by 10 percentage points. Mr. Paul’s victory in the Drake University online straw poll was just one of many that the Texas congressman has had since launching his campaign in May.
