Elon Musk made a bold claim on Twitter<\/a> on Tuesday. The Tesla founder said he would \u201cpay more taxes than any American in history this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is the claim true? Only the IRS knows for certain who the largest taxpayer in US history is, but Forbes<\/em> says Musk appears to be right.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe eccentric billionaire (and the world\u2019s richest person) likely owes the federal government at least $8.3 billion for 2021,\u201d Forbes <\/em>reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Business Insider<\/em> projects<\/a> Musk\u2019s tax bill is even higher when state taxes are included.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaxes on his stock, nearly a billion in Net Investment Income Tax, and the billions he likely owes California could add up to about $12 billion in total,\u201d report Jason Lalljee and Andy Kiersz.<\/p>\n

CNBC, meanwhile, figured Musk\u2019s total tax bill was even higher\u2014$15 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The bulk of Musk\u2019s tax bill stems from the nearly $13 billion in Tesla stock sold as of December 13, which is even larger than the record $10.2 billion worth of Amazon stock Jeff Bezos sold last year.<\/p>\n
