The hearings in Washington\n have been of special interest to me since what I do for a living is produce\n records, and any law or legislation restricting what can be bought also\n restricts me from eating. Frank Zappa has been very eloquent of late, and I\n agree with his assessment of the women involved as being bored wives who\n unfortunately receive more press than they are entitled. John is correct in\n that a rating system will not make unconcerned parents 'magically' concerned,\n and that that which is censored becomes more desired. Kids (and you and I) will\n listen to what we like regardless of the packaging - if access to music is to be\n limited, at what point does access to literature follow... anyway, It's good to\n finally have said SOMETHING here, I've felt so vouyer (sp?) istic all these\n months.... In many cases, people\n took to making alcoholic drinks without the right materials\n which led to many cases of blindness and death due to lead\n poisoning.\n \n Prohibition (the laws responsible for it) was eventually repealed\n as more sensible people realized the futility of fighting nearly\n everyone and getting nowhere fast.\n \n Now, we still have those folks, often called (sarcastically)\n 'do-godders' and they are still crying about the need to eliminate\n those (still with us) great evils.\n \n Naturally, they have added a few; the movie ratings to keep young\n people from being exposed to sex, violence, and corruption. The\n fight against pornographic materials, 'girly' mags etc. Prostitution\n is still alive and doing well and can even be found in the high class\n neighborhoods.\n \n Drugs can even be found in our grade schools, and the fight continues\n as well it should. On the other hand, while they do try, and\n sometimes produce good results, there are areas they should stay out\n of.\n \n Had they really learned the lesson over prohibition, they would\n realize (?) that. But they evidently didn't. They have the power\n of free choice but instead of exercising their own power to consume\n or not, they prefer to (attempt) to regulate the consumption of\n others.\n \n E.G. They were right to force auto makers to provide seat belts as\n standard safety equipment. On the other hand, the new Mass.\n mandatory seat belt law which could bring fines of $50.00 per\n un-belted person is wrong. Whether or not I buckle up is my choice\n not someone elses. (by the way, I do buckle up - my choice)\n \n The warning on cigarettes and tobacco products is a necessary reminder\n of the potential harm to your health; at least you know about it. And\n the smoking vs non-smoking sections in public places (and aircraft) is\n also good. However, should I choose to smoke, you might tell me where\n I; but not whether I can. (I don't - my choice)\n \n What is available on the public airwaves is rightly subject to minimal\n regulation, but the major factor should be choice not law. Recorded\n material whether it is records, tapes, books, or what have you is\n subject to that same process of choosing. If you don't want to watch,\n listen, read, so what. DON'T. You don't have to. I also have the\n same choice; and if I choose what you don't like again I say, so what!\n Who are you to dictate what I will or will not (be able to) use, view,\n hear?\n \n Ours is a great country where we are 'free to make our own choices'.\n However, when our choices are reduced to a set of statutes which\n dictate what or how those choices will be, then we will lose that\n freedom.\n \n Relative to the current thread on censorship, I see no value in\n rating records, or tapes except in the 'higher' prices the increased\n demand for the more restictively rated material will bring.\n \n We will no doubt argue the fine points both pro and con on these\n issues for years to come. One fact remains as it has for past\n generations. These 'great evils' will still be being fought and\n agrued after we are long gone; and we will still be making our own\n choices despite the attempts of the otherwise well meaning to enforce\n on us their choices instead of making their own and leaving us to\n make ours. <aren't you glad i have finally finished this?>\n \n FORUM> \n202 25-SEP 01:02 Open Forum\n RE: the great debate <!--??--> (Re: Msg 201)\n From: RODM To: JOHNMYSELF\n \n John,\n \n Your comments were as long as something I might try to write but are a NECESSARY\nreminder of the everpresent attemps to protect ourselves from ourselves which\n deletes choice and as a result threatens freedom!\n \n IN OTHER WORDS - Here!, Here!, I agree!\n \n As long as we remind each other of these truths we WILL remain FREE!\n \n FORUM>\n\n204 2-OCT-22:07: Open Forum\n RE: Censorship?
