In fact, Chicago is so thirsty for taxpayer dollars they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.illinoispolicy.org\/chicagos-thirst-for-taxes\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">imposed a five percent tax on bottled water<\/a>. They even have a special <a href=\"https:\/\/turbotax.intuit.com\/tax-tips\/fun-facts\/7-crazy-taxes-from-the-us-and-abroad\/L503QNBEQ\" rel=\"nofollow\">additional tax for candy and soda.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2013, <em>Forbes Magazine<\/em> named Chicago the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/pictures\/mli45lmhg\/4-chicago-ill\/#4e7ff70e75f2\" rel=\"nofollow\">fourth most miserable city<\/a> in the US. Coincidence? Maybe not.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"link-0\">New Transparent Tax Statistics<\/h2>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truthinaccounting.org\/library\/doclib\/City-Combined-Taxpayer-Burden-Report.pdf\">new report<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/tracking.cirrusinsight.com\/023b9d19-9300-499e-a4aa-49341e61981a\/truthinaccounting-org\" rel=\"nofollow\">Truth in Accounting<\/a>, residents of the Windy City are the most heavily taxed in nation, and it\u2019s not a close contest. Below is a breakdown of the 10 US cities with the largest per capita taxpayer burden.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Chicago\u2019s combined Taxpayer Burden: $119,110<\/p>\n<p>New York City\u2019s combined Taxpayer Burden: $85,600<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles\u2019 combined Taxpayer Burden: $56,390<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia\u2019s combined Taxpayer Burden: $50,120<\/p>\n<p>San Jose\u2019s combined Taxpayer Burden: $43,120<\/p>\n<p>San Diego\u2019s combined Taxpayer Burden: $35,410<\/p>\n<p>Dallas\u2019 combined Taxpayer Burden: $33,490<\/p>\n<p>Houston\u2019s combined Taxpayer Burden: $22,940<\/p>\n<p>San Antonio\u2019s combined Taxpayer Burden: $16,660<\/p>\n<p>Phoenix\u2019s combined Taxpayer Burden: $13,290<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Most statistics don\u2019t include underlying expenses not included in official reports. Taxpayers are responsible for paying for debts incurred by the government for schools, transit agencies, housing administrations, and more.<\/p>\n<p>When all factors are accounted for, Chicago\u2019s citizens actually carry a heavier burden than the people of New York City. And not just by a few pennies here or there, but by over $30,000 per taxpayer! As Lori Lightfoot, the recently elected mayor of Chicago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagobusiness.com\/node\/827811\/printable\/print\" rel=\"nofollow\">explained<\/a>, &#8220;We live in one of the most taxed cities and the most taxed county, unfortunately, in the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"link-1\">Gold Medal in Tax Olympics<\/h2>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.illinoispolicy.org\/tax-olympics-chicago-tops-the-table-on-taxes-and-fees\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Chris Lentino of the Office of Illinois Policy<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a comparative analysis of taxes and fees in the nation&#8217;s top 15 cities, Chicago won first place more times than any other city. When a city takes its citizens money it is saying \u201cwe know how to spend your money better than you do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In reality, each individual is in the best position to choose how they would like to exchange their money for various goods and services.
