The X-Files – 6×03 – “Triangle”

In this episode, Mulder finds himself on a the cruise ship, Queen Anne, in 1939 after being picked up on a life raft in the Bermuda Triangle.

There are lots of interesting aspects to this episode including the way it was filmed (made to appear real-time including side by side scenes occurring simultaneously) and the way the 1939 characters were different versions of the regular characters in the show. The Lone Gunmen also make an appearance (which is always a plus) as they are the ones to let Scully know that Mulder is missing and potentially lost at sea. I’m actually surprised that the X-Files didn’t make use of the Bermuda Triangle motif more often as it is the source of many unexplained things. Eventually, of course, Mulder is found and rescued from the life raft back in modern times (or at least in 1998).

There were, however, several things I didn’t like as much about this episode. While you are left with some uncertainty, the whole thing was almost certainly a dream sequence. There was no case solved (not that there usually is) or really even attempted to be solved. It’s more like a random adventure on the Queen Anne in 1939 which just happens to use the same actors from the X-Files with some of the same characteristics. Mulder runs around trying to avoid Nazis and figure out how to get back to 1998. What they did with the characters and the unique way in which the episode was filmed was kind of neat but at the end of the day the story itself just didn’t end up being that interesting or suspenseful to me and that is the most important part. Essentially, Mulder goes out looking for the Queen Anne, ends up lost and unconscious on a life raft and has a crazy dream.

Overall, I would give it 3/5 stars. Above average for the uniqueness of the episode and some of the neat things they did with it but a below average story including the dream-sequence nature of it pulls it down some.
