Exile was released by for both the Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-CD in 1992. It was a remake of a game originally released in Japan in 1988 for various computers mostly unknown to those of us in North America, including the NEC PC-8801, NEC PC-9801, MSX2 and the X1 turbo. The game is an action RPG and features both a top down perspective like the original Zelda and other similar games, as well as a side-scrolling action perspective depending on what you are doing.

While the the Genesis and TurboGrafx-CD versions are very close, the TurboGrafx version has a slight edge in some areas. Because it is CD based, there are more cinematics and better music (though this might be a matter of personal preference to some degree). The graphics are very close but the TurboGrafx-CD version has slightly more colors. The translation also seems to be a little better and the story more coherent on the TurboGrafx version. However, these are all mostly minor differences. One interesting difference is the fact that the Genesis localization (done by Renovation) censored certain aspects of the game (e.g. naked girls in one scene) while the TurboGrafx-CD localization (done by Working Designs) did not.

Overall this is a very good game even if it is not as well known as some others. While I wouldn’t say it is as good as Ys I and II, it’s still quite good and fans of those games will likely enjoy this one. I am not aware of any remakes or re-releases so you will have to resort to emulation or track down and original Genesis or TurboGrafx-CD versions if you want to play.

Exile was followed up by Exile: Wicked Phenomenon the following year for the Turbo Duo or TurboGrafx-CD with the Super System Card.

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (PS1, 1999)

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete was the first of three enhanced remakes of Lunar: The Silver Star. Lunar: The Silver Star released for the Sega CD and was published in the U.S. by Working Designs in 1993. Working Designs also published Silver Star Story Complete which came out for the PlayStation in 1999 (there were also Japan only Sega Saturn and Windows releases as well as a later iOS release).

Lunar is a fairly typical top down Japanese style RPG but it is one that is very well done. The 32-bit update increases the color pallet, improves animation and sound quality as well as bringing gameplay improvements from the sequel, Eternal Blue. There is also a larger character cast and additional side stories. The Lunar games feature very elaborate packaging, fluid animation and unlike some localized Japanese RPGS, quality dialogue.

In addition to Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete for the PlayStation, two more enhanced remakes of Lunar: Silver Star Story were made. The first was Lunar Legend for the Game Boy Advance and the second was Lunar: Silver Star Harmony for the PSP. The Lunar games can be a bit pricy but aren’t exceedingly rare and you should definitely seek out one version or another if you are a fan of this style of RPG.

  • Shining Wisdom (Sega Saturn)

Shining Wisdom was the first game in the Shining series for the Sega Saturn. Previous entries in the series, the first being Shining in the Darkness, were made for the Sega Genesis and Sega CD. Shining Wisdom was also intended for the Genesis or Sega CD but at the last minute it was decided to develop it for the Saturn instead. Unfortunately, this was a hurried change and it shows as the graphics are really not up to the standards of a 32-bit system like the Saturn.

The Shining series started life as a turn based role-playing game. Shining Wisdom was the first in the series to be an action RPG, similar to the Zelda series. Personally, I prefer the turn-based approach. It was translated and released by Working Designs in the U.S. and while not a terrible game by any means, it is not one of their better releases or one of the better games in the series. To date, the 1996 Sega Saturn release is the only version of this game available.
