  • MegaCon 2017 Cars

It’s amazing how far some people will take fandom and there’s know better place to see it in action than at a major convention such as one of the ComiCons, DragonCon or MegaCon among others. Look, for example, what some people will do to their cars (from MegaCon 2017 in Orlando):

Here is a Pokemon car. This particular vehicle (or one just like it) has been making an appearance at MegaCon for a number of years. I play a bit of Pokemon Go now and them but this seems to be taking it a bit far. I have to admit, the VW Beetle seems particularly appropriate though.

Now this one I can understand a little more. Who doesn’t want a vehicle like they had in Ghostbusters? This is a little bit of a more modern take using what appears to be a relatively modern Dodge station wagon instead of a hearse based on a 1959 Cadillac. A more practical choice perhaps but if I were going to take it this far I would go ahead and take the next step and do it with a hearse, even if it had to be one a little less obscure than the 1959 Cadillac variety.

Finally, we have my personal favorite car of the bunch, the General Lee. This is also the most true to the original. I mean, you can hardly tell this one is not the original (except after one of those jumps they did in the show the original would probably be in a junkyard). I know, some will say that the Confederate Flag makes this car racist but cars can’t be racist and there was nothing racist about my love for The Dukes of Hazard when I was a kid. And if you disagree, you’re a racist.

  • Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition (Game Boy)

The Game Boy is where the Pokemon video games got their start. Pokemon Yellow was a slightly enhanced version of Pokemon Red and Blue and preceded the release of Gold and Silver. Yep, there were a lot of Pokemon games.

In Pokemon Yellow, the player has the opportunity to catch 151 Pokemon. Pokemon Yellow has slightly better graphics than the previous games in the series and also starts you out with Pikachu. But other than these and a few other slight differences, it isn’t significantly different from its predecessors. Despite this, it sold very well and is considered to be one of the best Game Boy games. It was also heavily marketed. It was released to coincide with the first Pokemon movie and was released with a special Pokemon Yellow version of the Game Boy.

I have listed my personal copy on eBay here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/322577928331

  • Pokemon Stadium (Nintendo 64)

    Pokemon Stadium (Nintendo 64)

Pokemon Stadium was released in North America in the Spring of 2000. The sequencing of the Pokemon Stadium games can be a bit confusing because there was a predecessor to this game in Japan called Pokemon Stadium. Pokemon Stadium in the U.S. was really Pokemon Stadium 2 in Japan and Pokemon Stadium 2 in the U.S. was really the third title in the series. I don’t think North American Pokemon fans missed out on much though. Pokemon Stadium was really an improved and expanded version of the original with a slightly lower difficulty level.

Pokemon Stadium was basically a simple turn-based strategy game in which you battled other Pokemon. It came with a “transfer pak” that allowed you to transfer your Pokemon from the Game Boy Red, Blue and Yellow Pokemon games. This was the games most unique feature and also a clever way to sell more Pokemon games.

Pokemon Stadium was one of the best selling games for the Nintendo 64 selling nearly 4 million copies in its lifetime. However, reviews were mixed. The graphics were generally praised but the sound was heavily criticized as was the simplicity of the game. Pokemon Stadium was far less complex that the Game Boy based games which were really role-playing games.

Regardless, if you were a Pokemon fan and had the Game Boy games and a Nintendo 64 this wasn’t a game you wanted to miss. A sequel was released the following year that could use Pokemon from Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal as well as Red/Blue/Yellow.
