Predator 2 – by Konami for the Amiga

Predator 2 was released in 1990 and is based on the movie of the same name. You take the role of a Los Angeles police Lieutenant whose unfortunate job it is to stop illegal aliens of a new kind. The game plays very much like Operation Wolf without the light gun. You must put the crosshairs on the target and fire. The Amiga and other 16-bit editions offer the benefit of having mouse control.

While the graphics are quite good (at least in the Amiga version), the gameplay leaves a little to be desired. I’m not a fan of the shooter on rails genre for the most part anyway and this game does little to advance the genre other than having even more violence than average. In addition to killing aliens, you must also collect ammunition and power-ups and avoid killing civilians.

In addition to the Amiga, this game was also released for the Commodore 64, DOS, Atari ST and others. Of these version, the Amiga version is the best. If this is your type of game, you’ll have to track down an original copy for the Amiga or use emulation as this game has never been re-released as far as I know. There was also a Sega Genesis version of the game but it was released a couple of years later and is a completely different game played from an isometric point of view.

Images above are for the Amiga version of the game.

  • Bucky O’Hare (NES)

    Bucky O’Hare – Konami, NES, 1992

Bucky O’Hare was a fairly late release by Konami on the NES, debuting in 1992. The game is based on a relatively obscure comic book of the same name. In this game you play the role of Bucky who must rescue several of his crew members on different planets. Each of these crew members have unique abilities and when you rescue one you then gain the ability to switch to using that crew member as needed.

The game generally got positive reviews with the one common complaint being that it is a very difficult game. Odd since you would think this character would appeal to younger kids. Being such a late release, the graphics and sound are very good overall and the game plays very much like Mega Man. If you are looking for a challenging Mega Man type game then look no further.

Unfortunately, there haven’t been any re-releases or sequels. If you do want to give this one a try then you will have to track down an original cartridge or fire up an emulator. If you won’t get too frustrated by the difficulty, it is a worthwhile addition to your collection though.

    Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse (NES)

The third entry in Konami’s Castlevania series returned to more of a pure platform game like the original Castlevania as opposed to having adventure/RPG elements like the second game. However, it did offer branching paths unlike the original. Dracula’s Curse is one of the best NES games and has frequently shown up on various top ten lists. There are a seemingly unlimited number of side-scrolling platform games for the NES but this one, and the Castlevania series in general, is near the top of the heap.

Castlevania is one of the longest running Konami game series. The original was released in 1986 and it was 1990, near the height of popularity for the NES, when the third game in the series was released. Castlevania III is actually a prequel to the first game and features Trevor Belmont, an ancestor of Simon, the star of the original.

Castlevania III was a very popular game so it isn’t very hard to find an original (though it won’t necessarily be cheap). However, it has been released for more modern systems as well. It was released for Windows in 2002, on Wii’s Virtual Console 2009 and on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Virtual Consoles in 2014. The Castlevania series is one of the most iconic in existence and Castlevania III is one of the better games in a series of great games. This is definitely one you should seek out and play if you have never played it.
