  • Many IRS Seizures Are Illegal, Government Report Concludes

For the beleaguered IRS, the hits just keep on coming. After the targeting scandal, a key IRS official claimed the Fifth Amendment. House Committee Votes IRS Official Must Testify Despite Fifth Amendtment. Then there were all the expense issues, including Star Trek, Gilligan’s Island and line dancing videos.

Then there were the abused credit cards. Who wouldn’t like a charge card with bills direct to Uncle Sam? See Audit Finds $119 of Unused Nerf Footballs in IRS Cabinet. A watchdog report says there’s little oversight.

But now, the increasingly popular Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration reveals that 30% of IRS Seizures of Taxpayer Property don’t comply with the law. The report has an inglorious title but is worth a look: Fiscal Year 2013 Review of Compliance With Legal Guidelines When Conducting Seizures of Taxpayers’ Property.

  • PBS’s Gwen Ifill Defends Eric Holder, IRS Despite Online Backlash

Here’s an interesting example of your tax dollars at work: Gwen Ifill, a newscaster for the Public Broadcasting System, uses her television programs to staunchly defend Eric Holder, the scandal-ridden U.S. attorney general, and the Internal Revenue System, which has been accused of targeting conservative organizations that apply for a tax-exempt status.

Not content with using her roles as managing editor and moderator of the “Washington Week” program and as a senior correspondent for the “PBS NewsHour,” Ifill took her crusade online on Sunday, when she posted on Twitter that it’s “Fun to see the same (named & unnamed) folks calling for Holder resignation who always have” and asserted that “people don’t want to know the details back and forth” of the IRS targeting.

While @Matthops82 said that “the House needs to forget about the scandals and pass immigration reform,” it was all downhill from there for Ifill.

It didn’t take long for @JayCaruso to disagree with her comment on Holder, stating that “Gwen Ifill basically just said James Rosen had it coming,” while @Brock2120 asked: “Have you ever had a non liberal thought in your life?”

    Also, @PruPaine posted:

oh my… Ifill sides with Holder. Says journos need to rethink how they go after secret info. Astonishing.

“As the abuses of power have become egregious to the point of criminal,” @TheObsidianOwl declared, “yes, the calls will continue. Why would they not?”

  • Cruz: ‘Abolish the IRS’

I think we ought to abolish the IRS and instead move to a simple flat tax where the average American can fill our taxes on a postcard, put down how much you earn, put down a deduction for charitable contribution, for home mortgage, and how much you owe,” Cruz said in an interview with Fox News on Monday.

“It ought to be just a simple one-page postcard and take the agents, bureaucracy out of Washington and limit the power of government,” he added.

Lawmakers are probing the IRS’s use of higher scrutiny for Tea party groups seeking tax-exempt status.
