    Source: Game Player’s – July 1991

Game Player’s was one of many video game magazines published in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I remember when I got my original NES system I also bought a pack with a few issues of Game Player’s Guide to Nintendo Games. In 1991 Game Player’s was covering a wide variety of systems including the NES, Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, Atari Lynx, PC (DOS), Amiga, Game Boy and possibly others. The July 1991 issue includes:

    • The Editor’s View – Game Player’s officially begins covering the Super Nintendo as it has officially been announced for the U.S. Full coverage is set to begin in September.
    • The Tip Sheet – Hints and tips for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan (Game Boy), Faxanadu (NES), Maniac Mansion (NES), Shadowgate (NES), Super C (NES), Final Fantasy (NES), and Sword of Vermilion (Genesis).
    • Player’s World – A sneak peak with supposed specs of Atari’s upcoming “16-bit Panther” gaming system. This would ultimately morph into the “64-bit” Jaguar.
    • Nintendo News – Some coverage of the upcoming Super NES including games likely to be among the first released such as F-Zero, Super Mario 4 (Super Mario World), Hole in One, Final Fight and Pilotwings.
    • Game Boy Players – A detailed review of Robocop.
    • Arcade Action – A look at new games to be found in arcades including Slugfest (a pinball baseball game), and High Impact Football.
    • PC Players – A brief look at Wayne Gretzky II and MicroLeague Baseball for DOS based PCs.
    • Sega Players – A look at Centurion, a strategy game, and King’s Bounty, an RPG, both for the Sega Genesis. Also mentions of the upcoming Starflight and Sonic the Hedgehog.
    • Amiga Players – Bard’s Tale III: Thief of Fate and Hoverforce are the highlights for the Amiga this month.
    • Turbo Players – A detailed look at TaleSpin, a side-scrolling action adventure game for the younger crowd based on the cartoon series of the same name.

    • Atari Safari – Atari lowers the price of the Lynx and sales skyrocket. Plus a look at Blockout.
    • Nintendo Game of the Month: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom – Games based on movies are hit and miss at best. I suppose Temple of Doom is better than most and if you love Indiana Jones it was worth playing. It’s not spectacular though.
    • Sega Genesis Game of the Month: Batman – Another licensed game that is decent and graphically pretty good. I think there were a couple of Batman games on the NES that were better games though.
    • Computer Game of the Month: Space Quest IV – If you like point and click adventures, the Space Quest series was always one of the best.
    • Special Strategy Feature: Super Mario Bros. 3 – Need some help finishing SMB 3? Then this is the guide for you…
    • Game Reviews
      • The Little Mermaid – An OK NES game for the younger crowd based on the Disney movie.
      • Laser Invasion – A mediocre light gun game for the NES.
      • Hardball! – Classic baseball game for the Genesis. However, I had this game for the Commodore 64 and I don’t think this one is any more fun.
      • The Krion Conquest – Side-scrolling adventure game for the NES in which you play the role of a witch saving Earth from destruction from invading alien robots.
      • F-1 Race – Kind of a cross between Pole Position and Rad Racer only for the Game Boy. The best thing about this one was the four player support.
      • Lolo III – Make your way through various rooms by solving puzzles in this NES game.
      • Mario Andretting – A racing game for the PC requiring 512K (640K recommended) and supporting up to VGA graphics.
      • James Pond – An action adventure game for the NES featuring an undercover fish.
      • Conan – An action game featuring Conan for the NES. Conan may have been popular in the early 1980s but I don’t really recall Conan as a popular character during the time of the NES so this seems a strange choice for a license.
      • Whomp ‘Em – A game that would probably be derided as racist and/or cultural appropriation today.
      • Death Knights of Krynn – One of the Gold Box AD&D games. I loved this series of RPGs. This is a review for the PC version of this one. I played a couple of them on my Commodore 64.
      • Little Ninja Brothers – An action RPG for the NES featuring twin ninjas with an emphasis on the action.
      • The Punisher – This is a review of the Game Boy version. This is the type of game you would typically play with a light gun.
    • Guidepost: The Hot 100 – Brief overviews of 100 games covered in issues of Game Players. A random selection includes Qix for the Game Boy, NES, PC, Amiga, Commodore 64, Atari ST, Apple II and Apple IIgs; Muppet Adventure No. 1: Chaos at the Carnival for the NES; and Dragon Warrior II for the NES.
    • Game News & Previews – Previews of Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES (one of the most fun football games I ever played), Jet Fighter Simulation for the NES, Star Wars for the Game Boy, Les Manley: Search for the King for the Amiga, Smash TV for the NES (though this was far better on the Super Nintendo), Triumph for the Game Boy, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Defender of Dynatron City for the NES and Kiwi Kraze for the NES.
