I suspect that the recent round of messages about whether READ/NEW works or
doesn't work is related to the fact that MAIL.MAI must exist before READ/NEW
can do its job of resynching things. If MAIL.MAI has been accidentally or
intentionally deleted, READ/NEW won't work. I came across this when trying
to use `short course' usernames which had been cleaned up from their previous
use by deleting all files. The fix in this case is easy--send a dummy message
to yourself and then use READ/NEW to things back in order.
