Open mouth, insert foot, and turn. I hadn't tried out the CMODE or 
UEmacs. Lo and behold it does do what I wanted. So just ignore
my previous knee jerk posting. When I thought of the idea I was 
doing some LISP code so naturally I hadn't thought of trying the CMODE
with it.....

A note to you late night editors: I;ve found that on a IBM XT that cyan
text on a blue background is very easy on the eyes.
