Summary: We've been there before...

We've taken a crack at older versions of the CAP distributions and ran into the
same problems you have. Which patch-level of the CAP are you running? Have
you applied all patches to version 4 up to and including patch 7? Supposedly
the patches in patch 6 make the program more portable (I guess that would mean
eliminating calls to BSD-only routines, or at least tips on how to get around
it.)

Copies of the latest version of CAP and all patches to it can be found on

sumex-aim.stanford.edu and cu20b.columbia.edu via anonymous login.

On the sumex, the files are in the directory and
on the cu20b, the files are in the us:[us.cck.cap.d4] directory.

Make sure you have at least version 2 of the 'patch' program which will be
needed to apply the updates in the patch files. Some of the files are
shell archives, some tar, some compressed tar, just about every combination
one could think of. There is probably a copy of the sources to the patch
program on uunet.uu.net in the archives for comp.sources.unix. Just download
some of the indexes (anonymous ftp again, of course)
