Back when I was first learning to use UNIX, nobody considered it unreasonable to read the UNIX tutorial contained near the beginning of the user documents that came with the system. I'm sure that the notion that * and ? were processed by the shell was made clear there. In fact that is a key "win" of UNIX over OSes that make applications deal with globbing.
