No, I disagree. Compaq seems to think software compatibility is 
sufficient. It's not. How you equate this perception to "a poorly
formed assessment of a PC manufactuer's [sic] compatibility and
corporate motives" is beyond me. 

I think it's crystal clear that the Compaq 286 contains a lot
of oddball hardware, and that Compaq's aftermarket profit motive
is the reason for this.  If I need to repair or to expand my system,
I have to come to Compaq. Period, finish, the end.
