Would this have caused my dilemma? Nope. The problem is the DEC decided to be helpful and set up autologins for all your other terminals, the account it uses for that being, as I recall, USER. The first thing I do after installing uVMS on a new system is to get rid of this 'feature' (and it's thankfully not reinstated when you upgrade to a higher version). The filenames you want to deal with are SYS$MANAGER:ALFMAINT.COM and SYS$SYSTEM:SYSALF.DAT. The latter, if you want no autologins set up, can be deleted. The former is a procedure to allow you to deal with individual autologins piecemeal. I sincerely hope that when VMS 5.0 where (last I heard) "VMS is VMS" comes out, DEC doesn't set up default autologins on any of their systems.
