I might note that a certain PDP-10 operating system at MIT had a working NFS
over the ARPANET over 10 (15?) years ago.  It was called MLDEV, and supported
all the same operations as the local disk including disk-to-memory mapping.

Someday, perhaps in the 90's, Unix will evolve to the point that we can once
again enjoy the level of functionality we had in the 70's.  :-(
