As far as documentation goes, _The_TeXbook_ by Donald Knuth (Addison
Wesley Publishing Company, ISBN 0-201-13447-0) is excellent.

If you use the LaTeX package with TeX, you'll want to check out
_LaTeX_Users_Guide_&_Reference_Manual by Leslie Lamport (Addison-Wesley 
Publishing Company, ISBN 0-201-15790-X).
