I went through this same process about a year ago.  The best book I found,
(at least if you are interested in data analysis & database design) is
D R Howe's "Data Analysis for Data Base Design," 
    1983, Edward Arnold Publishers, Ltd.

A man named C J Date has also written several good books, especially on SQL
based systems.
