The following steps will get mail back in sync:

1.  Send yourself a "dummy" message.

2.  Copy MAIL.MAI to MAIL.TMP (or whatever)

3.  Enter mail, read and delete the message, and exit mail.

4.  Copy MAIL.TMP back to MAIL.MAI.

5.  Repeat step 3.


This process basically allows you to read one message twice, thereby
getting everything back into sync.  READ/NEW is not absolutely
necessary (I did not even know about the command when this happened to me).
