When playing CD and/or DBX recordings of classical music, it is not
at all unusual to hit 200+ watts on peaks while the overall peceived
"loudness" is less than that obtained from a compressed recording played
at a few watts level. Some of my DBX have incredible bass energy (typically
from a bass drum). But even that is not quite a match for the peak levels
that are heard (rarely) in a close-in seat at a live performance.
A low efficiency speaker and/or large room can increase amplifier power
requirements by orders of magnitude (10db == order of mangitude power).
