  A couple of years ago I succumbed to a salesman's blandishments about the
new age of cheapo "quality" zoom lenses.  I'm willing to believe that the
"sharpness" of my cheapo competes with that of my Nikkor telephotos, but
I regularly find myself leaving the zoom on the shelf.  Why?  Mostly because
the cheapo has really poor anti-reflection coating.  Every time the zoom
points anywhere near the sun, the picture contrast drops sharply.  So
that's another thing to look out for when choosing such lenses.
