I worked for a firm that did analyses of racial/ethnic quotas. And the standard, gov't-provided abbreviation is EEO. With regard to AA - I agree that there are problems. I haven't got a solution. I don't like the idea of discrimination against or for anyone on the basis of ``protected class'' (another official term). I recognize that there was/is some kind of moral need to do the things that these programs are supposed to do. I think that some of them are great - for example sending Hispanic recruiters to colleges where Spanish is the first language and education support for disadvantaged neighborhoods. But these CREATE opportunities without deliberately robbing them from other individuals. A couple of other thoughts: I believe that SOMEWHERE there is a musical which inlcudes the lines They've got to be taught, They've got to be taught, They've got to be taught Before it's too late Before they are six ... ... or seven ... ... or eight To hate all the people their relatives hate. They've got to be taught. They've got to be taught. I had a friend whose oldest son fell in love with and married a woman from a southern family. My friend had no malicious prejudice whatsoever ... a lot of stereotypes, but as far as I could tell she NEVER let them get in the way of helping people. On the other hand, I once heard her daughter-in-law remark while watching a television show ``How gross -- a nigger surgeon'' with a look of real disgust on her face. Well, now she and her husband have s son. What attitudes will he be brought up with? And what right does ``society'', through the school system (busing, etc) have to try to change these attitudes? What obligation does society have to try to change them? Please don't mail. If it is important enough to be said on this subject it should probably be broadcast.
