My father-in-law showed me this tool several years ago and I finally bought
one.  It's great!  You use it in non-square-foot gardening situations where
you have room for the tool between rows of plants.  It is simply a plate of
metal with necessary supports that is dragged just below the surface of the
dirt to uproot the baby weeds.  It looks like this:

        Long Handle                  \  |
     for use while standing           \ |
                                       \|

After you are done, just weed by hand right around the plants.  Be careful
next to young plants, though -- I uprooted a tomato plant!
My apologies to those gardeners who already are familiar with this (it's
nothing new).
