Having had, and still owning "old" bugs; I have seen your brake drum
problem. My caution would be not to "over-turn" your drums as you are throwing
away pecious metal each time you do. My old 65 with a NEW set of shoes,
properly adjusted, has a BUNCH of slack in the emergency brake cable system.
(yes, I have replaced the "streched" cable) After normal wear, I have trouble
getting the emergency brake adjusted so that it doesn't go to the stops. In the
long run you'll end up prematurely buying new drums because the old ones will
have been turned to their limit. I don't touch the drums on my bug unless they
are really scarred. New shoes are a lot cheaper than drums. Oh well, thats my
2 cents worth.
