A private pilot, according to many CFIs and one GADO specialist, does not have to bear an equal share of the flight. All he can do is recover his expenses. If someone wanted me to fly them from Chicago to St. Louis, I would tell them that my expenses are going to be $125 or whatever it was. Even if I came back empty, I believe I could legally collect the cost of deadheading back. I think the two key points are (1) You can't advertise for business and (2) you can't make a profit. This is probably a shady area for most people and it's important how everything is worded. But I believe a "private" can haul people at their request as long as he only breaks even at best.
