One shouldn't totally omit back-references to the previous article; it
provides a context for the response (given we don't all have split-screen
mailers and news readers, it's often the best you can do) and it reduces
confusion a bit if the reply comes in before the original, or if the original
doesn't come in at all.  This is especially useful in an article which is a
point-by-point reply to a presentation.  Obviously, it can be overdone, but
used in moderation it increases clarity.
