I guess it is only appropriate to flame on an article in this newsgroup.
The article from Brial Sutin really rubbed me the wrong way.
Concerning the following comment:

>>> On the opposite side, most Jewish families put an emphesis on
>>> learning. Many Jewish children never consider the idea that they might
>>> not go to college. The typical status symbols are ones that show great
>>> learning: medical degrees, law degrees, and tenure. That is where
>>> you will find many Jews.

Have you ever stooped to think that these so-called "status symbols" are
merely a by-product of something much more profound? A cursory look at
Jewish history gives you an idea of the determinism and fortitude
it has taken to preserve their identity.

>>> For the Mormons, the status symbol is an expensive business
>>> suit, which is what they wear 95% of the time. Success in business is
>>> what counts and that is what many Mormons do.

Take a look at Mormon history and you will find a strong will to survive as
a people. It was only recently that the extermination order on the Mormons
issued by Gov. Boggs of Missouri was removed from the books. If you
bothered to watch the CBS Evening News on June 2, you would have seen
a courageous and industrious group of people orginizing against the
elements. I didn't see a single business suit in the bunch.

Comments like those cited above are the SOURCE of racism and bigotry.
When we attempt to label a group of people because of some external
characteristic, we are creating a solid breeding ground for "subconscious
racism."
