Children learn from observation - they are not
*taught* to be respectful, but rather observe
respect in action. You do not demand respect
you command respect.

If you have children you know this is true,
or if you have disrespectful children it is
because they have observed your attitude toward
the world. It has nothing to do with calling
your friends by their first name.

I will admit I encourage my son to call me daddy
and his mother mommy, but not because of the respect
aspect, because I want him to acknowledge that
our relationship is a special one, distinct from
all others.
