I was at a local Dutch UNIX meeting on Friday, and a talk
was given by Dick Grune of the Vrije Universiteit of
Amsterdam (mcvax!vu44!dick) about a set of programs he has
written which handle ANSI standard tapes, let you copy a
tape to a disk-file and back without knowing the format of
the tape, etc.

We use it here for copying distribution tapes for the European
UNIX Systems User Group.
