Well, that's an 'undocumented feature'. All that means is when
the  monster was placed in the room at the beginning of the level,
the routine didn't check to see where the monster was landing. If you
had hit the bat and he started moving, he would not land on that spot
again.

Incidentally, you can find the same sort of 'bug' with yourself on
occasion. Ever find an undetonated trap underneath you after a teleport
or dropping to a new level?
