conscientious mechanics prime the pump when assembling a new motor, to the
extent of pushing oil out the pushrods, ie, bottom to top; you can prime
just the pump with a long screwdriver on most engines, by taking out the
distributor and putting the screwdriver in the slot on top of the pump,
and twisting it by hand (either way actually, since they are straight cut
gears) until you notice a substantial increase in the effort it takes
to twist the screwdriver; that primes the pump proper, but the hardcore
will do the same thing with a drill until the pushrods start oiling...
that's a bit easier than taking the pan off to put vaseline in it, no?
