Usually people starting out in a relationship aren't exposed to each
others' habits and lifestyles for a while. When they start spending
more & more time together, details of life, attitudes, friends, & values
start becoming apparent. These signals may be consciously or unconsciously
recognized by either person, and are somehow internally evaluated and
a decision made. Sometimes people consciously decide, such as "It's
obviousl to me that our lifestyles/goals/attitudes are so different
that it would cause constant disagreement, or continual 'your way or
mine' choices". But more often, people just "lose interest"-- they
know somewhere inside, that the mysterious, elusive "IT" isn't
there.
Or such is my (albeit limited) understanding of the process.
