Just think about how hiring works in many departments for a minute.
A position opens, and a few people in the department have friends
they can recommend for the job. These friends are almost always of the
same race as the person recommending them. They are also getting the
first crack at the job, the general public coming in only if none
of the friends is able to fill the spot. "It's not what you know,
but who you know" is still responsible for much of the hiring done
these days. Some companies even encourage that by offering vacations
and bonuses to employees that recommend friends the company can hire.
Since most hiring is done by whites, and most friendships are not
interracial, someone needs to step in and be the friend of minorities.
AAP is the friend. Since I doubt that the method will change, something
like AAP needs to stick around till there are enough minorities in
position to hire others. The government is just a more powerful friend;
it's also large enough to require lots of paperwork and red tape. The
more the public cooperates, the sooner AAP can be declared unnecessary.
So friends of yours have lost out on jobs due to AAP? How did they get
the jobs in the first place? Haven't they ever lost out on a
job/promotion to a white male they considered less qualified? How
many people who have been in both situations complain more and louder
about losing out to someone they can call names?
