Before we come down too hard on Roy
for beating his kids into submission, maybe we
should ask him what he means by *respect*.
Perhaps he just used the wrong word.
Last night I discussed this exchange with
my son (4 1/2) and my wife (34). two of us
have degrees and 9 years of experience in education
as well as some parenting. The other can relate to
children very well, so I thought he would be the one
to ask.
me: How should you treat someone who comes over
	to our houe?
mike: We should treat them nice.
me: Why?
mike Because they're our friend.
me: Well suppose our friend Roy (age 34) brought over
someone we didn't know. How should we treat
	this stranger?
mike: Nice.
me: Why?
mike: So they will be our friend.
me: What does *respect* mean?
mike: I don't know.
I told my son that I thought this exchange
was worthy of posting. He said:
*just tell everyone that all kids should have parents*

I like this guy even though he doesn't know the meaning of
respect. I find him to be well mannered, and *not* a
hypocrite.
