When I was a kid, more years ago than I care to admit...also in Pittsburgh,
my brother and some of his friends took on of the "new" red and white stop
signs and repainted it for Halloween...yellow with black letters, like the
old ones but HALT! instead of STOP.  Anyway, that means that until the late
fifties, yellow and black stop signs were common in my neck of the woods.
