Suicide is not illegal here in N.J. but you can be arrested for being a
disorderly person for trying. This gives the state a chance to let you
see a psychologist at state expense. You are normally held in the "psycho"
ward for 24 hours and then released.

The above of course is at the discretion of the police that respond to
a call for an attempted suicide.
