I beg to differ. I first heard the joke about the gorilla and the
expensive drink over 20 years ago. The first time I heard of it
involving a kangaroo instead was about 10 years ago in National
Lampoon, which had it in a cartoon which included a sign on
the wall of the bar listing the outrageous drink prices
(which defeats the purpose of the joke, namely that the gorilla
will "never know the difference.")
Regardless, I feel personally that the gorilla is superior to
the kangaroo as a participant in the joke, since he is more
likely to inspire trepidation in the bartender when he sees
he does not have enough chnage.
