Speaking for myself, the minimum criteria for going out with a guy is that he is a decent person and basically a nice guy. Sure, I once went out with an articulate drip, but that was because he laid a guilt trip on me about not being open-minded. I never went out with him again, though, because I resented the pressure he was putting on me, and besides, he really was a jerk! Nice guys are fun to go out with, provided that they're not feeling too self-conscious. With the shy type, it's best to introduce a topic of conversation that you'll both be interested in...don't ask about VAX architecture if you don't care. One topic which I personally guarantee to get the conversational ball rolling... ask him how he feels about the breakup of Ma Bell! Every man on the net has a very strong opinion when it comes to the phone company, because they either work for Ma Bell, or have a friend or relative who does. And if he gets SPRINT or MCI, well, you can make comparisons. ( OK, OK, there IS no comparison! ) Yes, this is a topic which will make the most retiring of fellows into a veritable Demosthenes...hopefully, he will have neither food nor pebbles in his mouth when he begins his oratory. And it is so easy to turn the conversation into other paths..."Say, what IS your phone number,...?" I don't know why there is this cultural preconception that "nice guys are boring". It's been spoon-fed to us so much, heck, even nice guys think they're boring! It is surprising how many free spirits camoflauge themselves in plaid shirts and cordorouys. They might like to motor around for the hell of it ( hey, where does this line on the map go? ), or have a hobby like wine-tasting, etc. You can learn from anyone, and have fun with anyone, and being with nice guys just makes it that more fun! The guy might like to participate in a sport with you, such as bicycling or racquetball. ( Aside on the bicycling: I've seen more than one date go sour if one of the people is an order of magnitude or so better than the other, especially if the better one is the woman! So, try and ask what type of bike they have before you go...if it's a bomber, leave your Masi at home and don't wear the jersey and cleats...go for the skin shorts though! And don't leave them on the hills, remember when you were a rookie. ) Remember...nice guys are so nice, they are willing to try anything at least once! Women, take note! Nice guys often know how to cook! Sometimes they know how to cook well! So what if a guy wears plaid'n cords all the time, is a Deadhead, and always hangs around the computer room. He may be waiting to talk to you! Don't be misled by superficial trappings, unless of course, you are the sort of person who cares about such things. If a person is nice, and may potentially be a fun person to get to know and do things with, DO IT! Don't just sit back and wait to be asked, ( they may be so down with all the past rejections, they might be a bit hesitant ) ask him! It's real easy, and can be phrased in a non-threatening manner with a low rejection rate... "Are you hungry? Let's go for a bite!" Look slightly starved when you say this. Rub your stomach suggestively. ( Hunger is one of the great levelers of human pride. Sleep is the other, but not on a first date, eh? ) Send any replies to [..]philabs!sdcsvax!sdccsu3!ee163ay
