I recently went through a rather full study of intelligent 1200 baud modems.
We eventually settled on the U. S. Robotics 1200 Auto Dial modem. It is
Hayes compatible in all but a couple of the parameter changes. I have an
Apple, and it works perfectly with all of my modem programs. At the time
we bought them, they were $429. But prices are falling quickly. U. S.
Robotics is now advertising a no frills model for about $440 I think. No
switches or status lights, but otherwise Hayes compatible. One nice thing
about the Robotics modem, it has a switch for switching transmit and
receive lines and another for disabling DTR. This makes it fairly easy
to interface to various computers or terminals.
