Job-control is basically a re-working of the UNIX signal mechanism. A number of new signals are added as well as two new signal actions (stop and con- tinue). Also, the ability to selectively hold signals (rather than ignoring them), both by programmer action and automatically (to avoid the problem V7-style systems have with multiple signals), has been added. In addition, a mechanism for manipulating process groups was needed.
