*porgy (po^ge~) n., pl. -gies, -gy: see PLURAL, II, D, 1 [prob altered < Sp.
or Port. pargo < L. pagrus < Gr. phagros, sea bream] 1. any of a number of
related saltwater food fishes (family Sparidae) having spiny fins and a wide
body covered with large scales, as the scup, the pinfish, and the sheepshead
(sense 1) 2. any of various other fishes, as the menhaden

I seem to remember that this was the beginning of a song sung by the Weavers
(y'know, Lee Hays, often wth Pete Seeger) near the end of a record called
``Travellin' on with The Weavers''. I am sure that this is not the original
reference.

I believe that the whole song as they sung it is

My father was the keeper of the Eddystone Light.
He courted a mermaid on fine night.
>From this union there came three:
A porpoise, a porgy, and the other was me.

[chorus]
Yo-ho-ho, the winds are free!
Oh for the life on a rolling sea!

One night as a was singin' up a ~~~~~~
Singing a verse from the evenin' hymn,
A voice from the starboard shouted ``Ahoy''
And there was me mother, a'sittin' on a bouy

-Don't be ridiculous, a boy is a juvenile male.
-No, a buuueee! It guides the ships to sail.
-Oh.

``Tell me, what has become of my children three?''
My mother then, she asked of me.
One was exhibited as a talking fish,
The other was served on a chafing dish.

Then the phosphorous flashed in her seawead hair.
When I looked again, me mother wasn't there.
A voice came a'echoing out of the night:
``TO THE DEVIL WITH THE KEEPER OF THE EDDYSTONE LIGHT!''

[repeat chorus]
