  In response to K. Wilbur's plea that 55 saved his and
  his brother's life,  I wonder, (1) why were they on the road when
  they were sleepy.  And (2) if they had been going 70mph from the
  start of their trip, maybe they would have been at home in bed
  before they became sleepy.  And (3) It has been noted that when you
  go 70mph, things are happening faster and therefore keep you alert,
  while when you slow down to 55, you and your body also have a 
  tendancy to 'slow down' and therefore induce a form of sleepiness.
