This problem does seem to be related to paging, as ..!machaids!ekb
suggests. I don't have PAGER set in the environment, so I tried
hitting DEL to cancel a long article, and
sure enough, all following articles were garbled. The garbling
algorithm was the same as before, i.e. only characters in position 1
printed out. Setting PAGER=more seemed to fix the problem for DEL,
but BREAK (which is what I normally use) still seemed to get me in
trouble. Only short articles got garbled; articles long enough to
require paging printed out fine.

There also seems to be some interaction with using the 'n' key. I
hit BREAK to my heart's content without causing any problems. But
as soon as I skipped an article via 'n', I started seeing garbage.
The critical sequence seems to be BREAK followed by 'n'.
