In about 790 Bera accepted Carolingian overlordship, having previously been a vassal of the Caliphs of Cordova. Between 801 and 803, participated in an expedition led by Louis "the Pious" and Willima Count of Toulouse that crossed the Pyrenees and captured Barcelona and the Castle of Tarrassa.

In March 816/7 Bera was given control of Barcelona, Besalu, and Gerona. In 820 Bera was accused of being disloyal by a Goth named Sanila. The matter was decided by a duel, which Bera lost (although not his life?), therefore Bera lost all of his possessions.
