[The Roll of Battle Abbey] Beauchamps, near Avranches, in the Cotentin, was part of the barony of St-Denis le Gaste. Hug o de Belcamp is written in Domesday as holding a great barony, comprising 37 lordships in Bed ford, Buckingham and Hertford. Hugh is said to have had three sons, Simon, Pagan, and Milo. T his great family, one of whom was among the founders of the order of the Garter, was the sam e race as the Grenvilles, Meurdracs, Montagues and were the ancestors of the earls of Warwick. The fourth is Osbert de Broilg, who Round suggests ma y have derived from Brouay, pointing out however that the Domesday form is more suggestive o f Breuil, a name borne by several places in Calvados, though not in the canton of Tilly. Thes e facts suggest further that the original home of the Beauchamps is to be sought in Calvados , but of the only two Beauchamps in that department one is a fief in Moyaux, cant. Lisieux, 7 6 kil.
