When he was 12 his family lived in Ossipee , New Hampshire. He entered Effingham Academy. form there he went to Phillips Academy, Exeter, later he entered the Law office of Bell and Tuck. In 1846 he was admitted to the bar, and opened an ;office in Newmarket, New Hampshire. He was a lawyer for 20 years. He was chosen State Senator from the First District, in 1870; while holding that office he was nominated from the same District for the Forty-ThirdCongress , to which he was elected in 1873. The Hon. William B. Small was , for twenty-three years a director of the Neewmarket National Bank, and, at the time of his death , its President. He was appointed County Solicitor, at a later period, he was reappointed by ExGovernor Cheney, and retained that office as long as he lived. Dartmouth College conferred upon him the honorary degree of Master of Arts.
