EARLDOM of ORKNEY [NOR] - subject to King of Norway until after 1379

John II, Jarl of Orkney and Earl of Caithness 1284 to a. 1312, b. circa 1259. He was one of the signatories of the Scottish letter of 12 Mar. 1289/90 to King Edward I about the marriage of his son Edward and Margaret the Maiden, Queenof Scots. On 13 May 1291 he had a safe conduct valid until 24 June to come to King Edward I, who was then at Norham. Hr was sum. to the first Parliament of King John Balliol at Scone (10 Feb. 1293); had letters of protection dated 28 Aug. 1296 from King Edward I valid for one year from 29 Sep. of that year, and swore fealty to him at Murkle in Caithness Aug. 1297. The name of his wife is notrecorded (b). He d. presumably before 1311 and certainly before 28 Oct. 1312 (c). He was suc, by his son. [Complete Peerage, X:Appendix A:30]

(b) Saint Clair, gives as his wife "dau. of Graham of Lovat." She must have d. a. 1299, as, according to the Icelandic Annals (Anderson, 0.3., Intro., p. Ii), Jarl John in 1299, being then 40, was betrothed to Ingibiorg, the two-year-old dau. of Eric II, King of Norway (1280 to 1299), by Isabella, sister of King Robert I Bruce.

(c) Ingibiorg was betrothed anew in 1311, and On 29 Sep. 1312 was m. to Waldemar, Duke of Finland (d. 1318), and had issue.
