He spent his youth in exile inEngland and was recalled by the nobles under the duke Hugh the Great at the deathof King Raoul. His energy and independence displeased Hugh, who waged war onthe king but was forced to submit in 950. Louis was succeeded by his sonLothair, whose own son Lousie V. SchmuhlHe spentmost of his rein struggling against his powerful vassal, Hugh the Great, as Louis proved not to be the puppet monarch Hugh hadanticipated. In 945, while intervening in Norman politics, Louis was captured andhanded over to Hugh, who imprisoned him for a year. On his release, Louisclosely allied himself with Otto I to retake Reims in 946. In 949 Louis again received control of Laon, and Hugh, excommunicated by French andGerman synods and by the Pope, made peace in 951 that lasted until Louis'sdeath.
