"Edmundo de Woodstock" was summoned toParliament by writ Aug. 2, 1320, about two years before he attainedhis majority. He had previously been in the wars of Scotland and hadobtained considerable territorial grants from the crown. In the nextyear he was created Earl of Kent, and had a grant of the castle ofOkham, in the County of Rutland, and shrievalty of the county. Aboutthe same time he was constituted Governor of the castle of Tunbridgein Kent; and upon the breaking out of the insurrection, under ThomasPlantagenet, Earl of Lancaster (son of Edmund Plantagenet, 2nd son ofHenry III, King of England), he was commissioned by the King (EdwardII) to pursue that rebellious prince, and to lay siege to the Castleof Pontefract.
