England of HENRY II's sons, but was captured by Henry and forced tosign
(1174) the treaty of Falaise, which made Scotland a feudal possessionof
England. In 1189 he bought an annulment of the treaty from RICHARD I.His
alliance (1168) with LOUIS VII of France started the longFrench-Scottish
friendship.

William was captured near Alnwick Castle that July 1174 when he joinedforces
with English rebells against Henry II, the resultant was a temporaryloss of
