The Grayson County census of that year has Kessiah SPENCER, a widow, 50, born in Virginia (no maiden name), living near the Nolin River with her six youngest children. Since all earlier censuses named only the head of household and the number of persons in each age bracket, we have been unable to locate her husband's name. A search of marriage records of both Virginia and Kentucky also has been fruitless. With the exception of signing consents for the marriages of two of her children in Hardin County, no further records have been found for Kessiah. However, in Grayson County Cemetery Records, Martin SPENCER seems determined to ber her son. Kessiah's children are Martin; Sarah Jane; William; Malinda; George Washington; Augustus; and Margaret...... NOTE: There is more information on her children. ********************************************************** SOURCE: Susie Hiland - bshiland@bellsouth.net 23Jul2004 received two e-mails. Wanted to send you a little more information. Richard and Malinda Carby are listed on the 1860 census Richard Kerby, age 23, Farmer, $180 – value of person estate, born Kentucky, cannot read or write Malinda Carby, age 24, born Kentucky Peter Duese, age 78, male, born in Virginia I have no idea who Peter Duese is or how he ties into the Carby’s or Spencers. Have you heard of him before? Also, the information regarding Martin being a son of Kessiah is incorrect. I wrote to St. Joseph Cemetery requesting information and they have Martin’s parents as Ben Spencer and Ollie Taylor Spencer. Martin was born in 1825 and died June 8, 1910. On the 1870 census, there is a John Spencer age 43 next door to William Spencer and Malinda (Carby) Spencer and George Spencer and Emily Jane (Carby) Spencer. I am wondering if John is a son of Kessiah along with William and George. ******************************************************** SOURCE: Sarah STAPLES (granddaughter of Lacy Howell SPENCER) - e-mail: sastaples@alltel.net 4 Nov 2004 I was on Ancestory. com yesterday and found where you had been on Family Trees since I had been on there last and put on a history of Kessiah Spencer. I am Lacy Howell Spencer granddaughter. Yes Martin was a brother to George Washington because My mother use to talk and tell us about Martins son Basel having a car and comming to see them. About the first car she could remember. But of course back before tv people used to set and tell tales about thing that happened in their lives. There was also a son named John Spencer born in 1827. I was lucky enough to find a Catholic record on Martin, but haven't been able to turn up anything on John or George or William. I do have the marriage liscense of these two George and William. I don't know anything about Agustus, sometimes I wonder if he was the Spencer named Rilley that killed the Henderson boy at Spurrior Ky. I also know who Joseph married. They are living in Ohio. I used to keep in touch but the lady I wrote died and I haven't heard from them in a while. But haven't got much on them. The court house burned in Grayson county in the late 1800 and you can't find much before late 1890's. I didn't know if I was suppose to write you or not but your e-mail address was there so I though it wouldn't hurt. Where are you from and who are you a desentent of. I live here in kentucky not far from where Kessiah had her family. Well fell free to write me if you like, I would be glad to hear from you. I am a cousin to Sharon Guffy I saw where you and her had exchanged information. Her dad and my mother were brother and sister. My e-mail is: sastaples@alltel.net Looking forward to hearing from you. Malinda was my gg grandfathers sister. Wondered how much information if any you have on Malinda Richard. Thanks for your time. -------- 19 July 2004 I did mean Malinda and Richard Carby. I don’t have a lot of information except that Malinda’s maiden name was Spencer. Her mother was Kessiah (unknown maiden name) Spencer. In 1850 she is living with her mother and siblings in Grayson County. She married Richard Carby August 15, 1955. I’m assuming their son Augustus was named after her brother Augustus who was born 1841. Not sure what happened to him. I have a few differences than what you have. Some of it is just a matter of a year or two on the birth years. But since most of those are guesses from census records, it doesn’t really make a difference. I do have a birth year of 1836 for George from the 1900 census. Same record shows a birth year of 1838 for Emily Jane Carby Andrew Jackson Spencer is buried in Bethany Cemetery in Louisville. He was married twice. Second wife was Isabelle Cundiff. She is buried with him at Bethany. They married March 10, 1891. She was born October 21, 1869. Some discrepancy about the date I was given for her death and the tombstone year. Also Andrew’s tombstone gives his birth year as 1856. Kendrick was born in 1859/60. He was married first to Nancy Pilkenton. Second to Mary Rose. Mary Rose was born August 2, 1874 and died August 22, 1948. Lenora is buried in Sonora Cemetery. Martin Spencer and his wife Rose are buried in the Carbytown Cemetery. Rose was born July 31, 1873 and died April 14, 1950 Asa and his wife Getrude Hazel are buried in Bethany Cemetery in Louisville. I have Asa’s dates as born October 18, 1883, died September 13, 1969. Gertrude Hazel ws born February 12, 1891 and died June 28, 1938. They were married February 28, 1909 in Grayson County. I have Lacy Spencer born October 18, 1883, died August 20, 1961. I believe he and Ollie are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Grayson County. I will have to find a recent email to verify the dates and cemetery. I have typed up the 1900 census information on George and Emily and am attaching it to this e-mail. ********************************************************* 5.
