Ralph Farnum (1662)
Ralph came with his father to America from Eng. in about 1635 on the
Brig called James, landing in Boston. Ralph Snr. received a 4 acre house
lot in Andover and also received additional land in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
division of land which was consolidate into a single parcel adjacent to
his house lot.
The witchcraft trials in Salem, MA spread into Andover and forty one
or more persons were accused of witchcraft. Eight were condemned and
three were hanged. In "Historical Sketches of Andover" a story is told of
how Martha Carrier "... was the only one of all, male or female, who did
not at some time or other make an admission or confession." None of the
Farnhams were accused but, sad to say, two of Ralph's sons were called to
testify against her.
