Left Norway, his home, about the age of 15 and became a merchant
marine. He travelled the route from Argentina to New York City.
One day he became tired of working as a merchant marine and
stepped off the boat and became the illegal immigrant of the
family. He stayed for a while with a cousin in the Norwegian
sector of New York City, but travelled western New York in order
to become more "American" and to learn the English Language. He
later settled down in Bliss, New York, where it reminded him of
home. He later met his future wife, Lucy Joy Belle Wilson, in
this same area.
