Presley Brannon was a veteran of two wars, the Mexican War
and the War Betwee n the States. He enlisted, April 28th,
1847, and served in company A, 12th r egiment of the U. S.
Infantry, during the Mexican War and was discharged July
25th, 1848. In January after his return from Mexico, he
was married to Eli za Ann Benson Rowland, daughter of Henry
Jefferson Rowland, by the Reverand J ohn G. Landrum, at the
Landrum home in Spartanburg, South Carolina. One of t he w
itnesses to the ceremony was Hamilton Bishop.

J ohn S. Brannon was born in South Carolina but as a young m
an went to Georgia where he taugh t school for two years an
d there also he met and married Nancy A. Elizabeth Carlisle
. Abou t 1858 with his family he joined a group who we re m
igrating to Arkansas. He first settled i n the vicinity wh
ere Greenlan d is located but some members of his family wer
e not in good hea lth so he mo ved on to a beautiful mountai
n area in the Boston range. To his friends and rela tive
s he said, 'This is Health,' and that was the name he gav
e the Pos t Office he establishe d there. He served as Post
master of Health, Arkansas until his death in 1907. There i
s no Po st Office at Health now, but it is li sted on many A
rkansas maps and it is a fine community wh ere many of hi
s de scendants still live. It is now known as Brannon Mount
ain and thecommunit y church is Brannon Church. He is bur
ied in Brannon Cemetery. John S. Brannon took great pl eas
ure in building up a society and much is still in evidenc
e that he had a measure of succes s.

'J. S. BR ANNON (my g Grandfather) one of the leading citize
ns of Madison County, and p ostmast er at He(a)lth Post-Offi
ce, was born in Spartinburg District, SC, Aug ust 23, 1832
, being th e son of William and Judia (SLAY, [should be Sea
y]) BRANNON, both of whom were natives of SC .
The father followed agricultural pu rsuits all his life, an
d he and wife passed their last day s in SC, he dying abou
t 1864, at the age of about 73. Both were members of the Me
thodist Epis copal Church, South. Their marriage resulted i
n the birth of twelve children , six now living : Mrs. Sara
h HAMMETT, Mrs. Cythia GRAMLIN(G), Mrs. Elizabeth REAGAIN
, Mrs. Mary BISHOP, Willi am H. (Harrison) and J. S. the la
st named was the eleventh child born to his parents.
In 1853 he left his home in SC an d went to Walker County, G
A, where he followed farming, whic h hehas since co ntinued
. June 19, 1856, he married miss Elizabeth CARLISLE, a nati
ve of Sev i er County, Tenn., born June 10, 1836, and the da
ughter of Nathan Carlisle. Her parents move d to Bradley Co
unty, Tenn., when she was nine years of age, and from ther
e to Georgia one yea r later.
In 1857 Mr. and Mrs.Brannon moved to AK and located in Was
hington County, where they reside d until 1872, when they m
oved to their present location. Mr. Brannon is the ownero
f 280 acre s of good land, all the result of his own indust
ry.
During the late war he s erved a short time as conscript i
n the Confederate army, and was at t he batt le of Prarie Gr
ove. In April, 1884, Mr. Brannon had the post-office establ
i shed at He( a)th Post Office, and at that time was made po
stmaster, and still holds the office. Previou s to this, i
n 1882, he engaged in the mercantile b usiness, which he con
tinued for two years .
To Mr. and Mrs. Brannon's marria ge have been born fourtee
n chldren, eleven living: Robert C. ,Two infant girl s unna
med (deceased), Mary A., John W., Nathan A. (my grandfather
), Dennie H . and Wayne M. Mr. Brannon and wife are member
s of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and he i s steward i
n the same. He is a member of theK. of H., is a R epublica
n in politics, and an ex cellent citizen.'
