He was born in the state of Kentucky, Jan 3, 1822 and came to Missouri with his father, David Cooper, at age ten. Uncle Dabner Pettis, who taught a subscription school in a little log schoolhouse was his first pioneer teacher. The teacher was no ordinary man and Daniel progressed rapidly and will ever look back to that day with pleasure, as the silver hairs of age are coming on. He remained a bachelor until he was 47 years of age, strictly attending to business and improving his beautiful farm, and when the day came for his nuptial feast he was united in holy matrimony to the beautiful and pious young lady, Miss Isabella A McCray, daughter of a prominent farmer of Green Co., MO., April 8, 1869. Her father was a native of Tennessee and settled in Green County about 1851. During the Civil War(1862) he was shot down while standing in his own door, by Kansas Jayhawkers. From this union, 3 children were born. Two are living, one boy and one girl; Jennie Lee and Stonewall, aged 12 and 10. In 1870 his present residence was erected at a cost of about $2000, in Section 16, Township 44, Range 24. He owns 532 1/3 acres on the very best black limestone land. In his life, Daniel has made one move and that was one mile south of his fathers old home, being January 1882, fifty years since. In politics he has never voted anything but a straight Democrat ticket. In religion he is a Baptist and his wife a southern Methodist. His location is among the finest in the township, situated on the divide between the waters of the Osage and Missouri Rivers. Daniel during the Civil War was with General Price and served honorably till the close of the war. He was present at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, in Springfield, MO. Since the close of the war he has been counted among the enterprising husbandmen. One of the first things he did when he settled was to plant an orchard. He has 200 acres of fine blue grass pasture where he grazes fine cattle, sheep and horses. Although it was late in life when he became the head of a family, yet he is kind and social in the domestic circle and around his fireside home sweet home. He is a liberal contributor and supporter of his church and very hospitable to friends and strangers.
