If richer peop le could sponsor others for 3 years; i.e. ship's fare, provisions, and a piece of land fo r a home in Virginia they were given large tracts of land. Many of the first settlers died b ecause of fever and disease in the swampy lowlands by the coast so Virginia was dubed the "De ath State" and people were afraid to come. Those who moved inland and survived usually becam e wealthy plantation owners. The Taylors from John's family were among these early settlers who prospered. They also owne d ships and other businesses.
