Zachary Taylor Jr. served in the Revolutionary War in a Virginia Regiment, and w as one of Washington's Rangers at Braddock's defeat in 1755. He liked to relate that he an d Washington were the only Rangers who could stand at the foot of Natural Bridge and thro w a rock to the top. He and his brother Richard were said to be men of extraordinary physiqu e, each 6 ft 2 in tall and weighing 250 lbs. He married Alice Chew, his cousin; her mother and his father were siblings. They moved to Woo dford co. Ky and settled on a large estate on South Elkhorn Creek. Alice was a professiona l seamstress and made clothes for her family.
