Elias Hicks was a Quaker. According to the Religious Society of Friends: The Quaker religion was founded in England ca. 1648. The Quaker religion was founded in England about 1648. They were severely persecuted. After several years, the government officials were convinced that they were not trying to ruin Christianity, and by 1689, had won some toleration in England. Many traveled to America. William Penn, their leader, founded the colony of Pennsylvania in 1682. Prior to that, Rhode Island had been their stronghold, tough most colonies had some Quakers. In America, they bacame divided by religious disagreement. At first, they were called "Friends in Truth" or "Children of Light". The term "Quaker" was a nickname of ridicule given to them by Justice Gervose Bennett, a magistrate, because their leaders told their followers to "tremble at the Word of God!" The did in fact trimble in the ferver of their religious feelings at their meetings. They believed in strict honesty and simple living, would not take an oath, and used "thee and thou" as terms of humility. They felt that meetings should be spontaneous with men and women speaking and praying as the spirit moved them. Elias Hicks was a Quaker minister. He preached a more liberal Unitarian doctrine and his teachings split the Quakers. The group following him were known as "Hicksite Friends." Today, the Hicksites are part of the group that formed the Friends General Converence in 1902. Source: World Book Encyclopedia, Vol. 6, page 459-61. Shadrach, Meshac, and Abendego moved to Sullivan Co., TN from Rockbridge Co., VA. ca. 1760. Sullivan Co., TN., once part of Washington Co., VA. and Rowan Co., NC. Most of the people were in the Watauga Settlement. Source: Sullivan Co., TN. deed book 1, p. 37, 23 Oct 1782 for 317 acres in NC. on the Holston River. [Compiler's Note]: There was a John Hicks of St. Malry's Co. MD. whose will is recorded 21 May 1749: "Whereas my Daughter Elizabeth in England being married to one Mr. Hall and is well provided for by a settlement from her said husband before marriage...she have no part of my personal estate." said to be of Whitehaven Co., Cumberland, England. [Wills, Liber 28, folio 517]. Relationship unknown.
