man William ANDERSON‏‎
Born ‎± 1700 , died ‎ Jul 05, 1763 at Juniata Co., PA ‎
BIOGRAPHICAL INFO:

WILLIAM ANDERSON as born in Scotland in the year 1710. He immigrated to this country with his family and settled in Cumberland County, Pa. He came into possession of a large tract of land lying along the Tuscarora Creek in what is now known as Juniata County. During the Indian Troubles, the People living in Cumberland and owning land in Juniata, came over the mountains to harvest the crops which they had sown the previous year. It was while he was attending to this duty that he lost his life at the hands of the Indians. The circumstances of his death have been told to those now living by members of the family who were alive at the time of the massacre. The facts in the case are also corroborated in the following account of his death in a book entitled "Incidents of Border Life," comprising narratives illustrative of the times and condition of the first settlements in parts of the Middle and Western States. The account is found in the narrative of Robert Robison, who was an eye witness to many of the scenes narrated. He says, among other things: "on the 5th day of July, 1763, the Indians came to Juniata, it being harvest time and the white people were come back to reap their crops. They came first to the house of William White. It was the Sabbath day; the reapers were in the house and the Indians crept up to the door and shot the people lying on the floor.**** The neighbors were alarmed in the evening by guns firing at William Anderson" where the old man was killed with his Bible in his hand, supposed to be about worship. His son also was killed, and a girl that had been brought up from a child by the old people.

This occurred on the hill overlooking the Tuscarora Creek, near the spot where now (1876) stands the stone house on the farm owned by Mr. John Nourse, and about a mile north-west of the Spruce Hill School house.

A party of men from Cumberland, hearing of the many murders committed by the Indians, came to Juniata to dispose of the dead in a proper manner. The remains of William Anderson, and those of his son, were buried a few rods east of the stone house. He was for many years, a member of the old Scotch Presbyterian Kirk and was transferred to the American Presbyterian Church.
