William DAWSON, son of Henry DAWSON and Mary EDWARDS. Born C 1757 at Amherst Co., VA , died C 1840 at Nelson Co., VA , 82 or 83 years Death: between Jan 27 1840 and Nov 7 1840. _______________________________________________________________________ 1810 Nelson County - William Dawson has one male under 10 (Alexander), one male age 10 to under 15 (?), one male 26 - 44 yrs of age (William), 2 females under 10 (Catherine & ?) and one female age 16 - 25 (Bathsheba). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1820 Nelson County - William Dawson has 2 males under 10 yrs of age (William Jr.& ?), one male age 16 - 26 yrs of age (Alexander), one female under 10 yrs of age (Catherine), and one female age 26 to 45 yrs of age (Bathsheba). It would appear that the head of household was not home at the time of the census taking since the entire family still fits the 1830 other than 1 more male child under 10. ______________________________________________________________________ 1830 Nelson County, VA census Dawson, William, one male age 15-20 (William Jr.), one male age 70-80 (William Sr.), one female age 15-20 (Catherine), one female age 40-50 (Bathsheba). ______________________________________________________________________ - Jan. 27, 1840 Nelson County Deed Book 9, page 96, deed between William Sr & Bathsheba, his wife and William Dawson Jr & Catherine Dawson. In love and affection, one hundred, nineteen acres are transferred to them for only $1. Only William Jr. is on the 1840 census with his mother, sister, and niece. William Sr. dies bet. Jan. and Nov. of 1840. This listed William and Catherine separately as Dawson's. ______________________________________________________________________ 1850 Nelson County, VA census Dawson, William, age 36 yrs, born in VA, value of personal property - $80 , Barsheba, age 65, (which would make her born bet. 1784-1785) female, born in VA, cannot read or write, pauper (ancestry lists her as "Bautista") , Susan, age 17, female, born in VA (Alexander's Daughter) ________________________________________________________________________ Married Sep 04, 1804 at Amherst Co., VA (35 or 36 years married) to: Bathsheba "Barshaby" MAYO, daughter of Benjamin MAYO and Mary Ann . Leonard Henley Wm Crawford C. A. C. Page 2 This is to certifi that William Dawson and Bathsheba Mayo was Legally Join’d in Matrimony this 27th day of September 1804 by John Young To the Clk Amherst C C. - _______________________________________________________________________ I got my certified copies of the real marriage bond today. Now we know that Bathsheba had lived in the area (Amherst Co.,VA) for several years and William didn't have to go to Fluvanna Co. to meet her. We know that Uncle Leonard was guessing at her age, which explains why it is off by 2 yrs. She was really 20 yrs of age. Leonard was the brother to Mary Ann Henley, which was my final proof that Bathsheba belonged to that family (Benjmain Mayo & Mary Ann HENLEY). To me, that would seem to indicate that Richardson "Hensley" Dawson's middle name really was Henley. Bathsheba had a younger brother born prior to her marriage to William whose name was Richardson Henley Mayo. With Alexander naming his son after his mother's brother, that would seem to indicate that Alex knew his Uncle Richardson well growing up and thought a lot of him. Going from memory, his Uncle Richardson was within 10 yrs of age with Alexander, so they prob. played together when Bathsheba would go home to visit her parents. (?) _______________________________________________________________________ Virginia Marriages, 1740-1850 Groom Name: ALEX B. DAWSON Bride Name: BARBARA ALLEN Marriage Date: 30 Oct 1827 County: Nelson State: Virginia _______________________________________________________________________ A Deed of Trust is recorded in a Nelson County Deed book between Alexander Dawson, William P. Perkins, Benjamin Perkins and John Mosby, May 1829. Alexander secures a small debt with his personal property as a bond, to be the overseer of a plantation owned by John Mosby. This land was adjacent to that of his father-in-law, William Allen in Nelson Co., VA ________________________________________________________________________ The 1830 census shows Alexander "Dauson", with wife and son under the age of five. Barbary apparently died sometime before 1833, possibly in childbirth. Alexander is not on the tithing list for that year.~~~~~~~ ________________________________________________________________________ The above info places the death of BARBARA L. ALLEN at 25 years, with age at birth of child (RICHARDSON HENSLEY DAWSON) at her age 20. The child's arrival fits with the timing, but no more children and her age at death leave many questions... illness, other unknown children? Since ALEXANDER has 9 children with his 2nd wife it seems unlikely he would have had only one with his first wife unless something prevented it. Craig Allen. ________________________________________________________________________ A marriage bond between Alexander B. Dawson, widower, and Sarah Long, signed by her father, John Long on March 23, 1837, places Alexander in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia on that date. Sarah's mother was Elizabeth Sheetz and she and John Long were married in 1818 in Augusta County. John died in 1850 and Elizabeth after 1870. _______________________________________________________________________ Alexander and Sarah migrated to Nicholas County, Virginia (which is now Clay CO.,W.Va.), and according to one source "lured by bounteous hunting and good farm land, Alexander secured property and settled on Little Laurel (Clay County), where he remained until his death. Little Laurel is only a few miles from Ivydale where I grew up but it is located on top of one the mountains near Ivydale in a remote and difficult to reach area. Alexander and Sarah are listed in the 1840 Census of Henry District of Nicholas County. This district became Henry Township of Clay County, Virginia (now W.Va.), in 1858.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Source: Art Friend http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvclay/dawson.htm _______________________________________________________________________ U.S. Census > 1840 United States Federal Census > Virginia > Nicholas > Alexander B.
