We have it here in our public Lib. I'll try to remember to call the library tomorrow & get the author & copyright date. Most of these books were published in the 1930-50's. I will try to be brief. Originally what is now Tenn started out as part of Va Colony. When N.C. was formed Va Colony became N.C. Because of it being so isolated, the settlers found it difficult to keep in touch with N.C. and did their own thing. Thats where the "overmountain men" came from. After the Rev. War. N.C. tried to give this land back to the Fed. Govt, but they didn't want them either so in 1784 the people of Watauga decided to form their own state. It existed for 4 years and in 1788 became a part of Tennessee. It consisted mainly of Washington, Greene, Sullivan & Hawkins I think. These are the old boundary lines not the present. Washington Co, the biggest, was also part of Va. & N.C. so in looking at records, you have to look in those states also. ________________________________________________________________________ 1836 Marion County Tax List 10th district (Firey Gizzard): Catherine Anderson, Thomas Asher, Samuel Anderson Sr., Peter Anderson, Peter Anderson Jr., William Anderson, Alfred Anderson, Samuel Anderson Jr., Simon Bible, John Bible Jr., George Bible, Philip Bible, James Bryson, Jefferson Barber, Christopher Bible, John Bible Jr., William Champion, James Caughran, Moses Caughran, Willis Champion, Charles Christian, Joseph Denny, David Goins, William George, Hincha Gilliam, William Garnet, Joseph Gilliam, John Gowan, Samuel Gilliam, Joseph Graham, George Graham, Conrad Hulvey, Henry Hulvey, James Halby Sr., John Heath, John Hargis Jr., Abraham Hargis, John Hargis Esq., Abner Hargis, Nancy Hargis, William Hays, Enoch Harecastle, ___ Hill, Samuel Harris, Evan Jones, Jimmy Johnson, James Klepper, Noble Ladd, Ferel Ladd, Nathan Lemon, Constantine Ladd, Samuel Lemons, Amos Ladd, James McCowin, James G McCowin, John McGriff, Jonathan McMurray, John Morgan, McMurry & Rice, William McMurry, William McCoy, John McCoy, John Nunley, Thomas Pack, Johnston Pack, Moses Pack, Joseph Pack, Tagre? A. Hargis _______________________________________________________________________ I have found several different states listed as birth state. KY, TN, VA and NC. William was born in the colonies before Tennesse and Kentucky were made states. North Carolina owned her Western Lands beyond the Great Smoky Mountains. She ceded her rights to her Western Lands in 1790, and in the same year, the United States Congress created the Territory of the US South of the River Ohio, or as it was more commonly know, the Southwest Territory. In 1796, those lands became the State of Tennessee. The influx of settlers started as a trickle. At the end of the Revolutionary War, the spigot opened and more settlers poured in, mostly from southwest Virginia. While North Carolina owned the land, it was the Virginians who first settled in any numbers. ______________________________________________________________________ 1850 Census states Birth place VA U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules states KY _______________________________________________________________________ There is no record when William Anderson came to TN. William came to TN with his brother Samuel. In 1814 William recieved a grant for seventy five acres of land, so no doubt he was living here. William was a farmer and his property or realestate was listed for $1000.00 which at that time was great. All their children were born in Tennessee. He was born in 1790 and died in 1860. He lived in Davidson Co., TN in 1813 where his first 2 sons were born. _______________________________________________________________________ U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules Index Surname: William Anderson Year: 1860 County: Marion Co. Mark, Bird and Spencer Bird) was born March 15, 1914 in Davidson Co., TN. He died Feb. 21, 1885 and was buried in the Anderson Cemetery located at Midway in the 18th Dist. of Franklin Co., TN. To date 1994 circumstantial evidence indicates his father was William Anderson (b. 1790, Virginia: d. in Davidson Co., 1820) His mother was Margaret. b. 1790, North Carolina, Died in Marion Co., TN Albert Spencer married Jan 9, 1848 In Lincoln Co. Tn, Rebecca E. Enochs, b. Apr 5 1818, d. July 30, 1888 and was buried beside her husband in the Anderson Cemetery. Her Father was Isaac Enochs and her mother's name was Sarah Elliot. According to a deed, land entries and surveys, Albert Spencer was living in Marion Co., TN in 1830 and 1840's. On Aug 25, 1849 he received a land grant from the state of Tennessee for 5,000 acre land grant situated on the top of Cumberland MT. on the headwaters of Battle Creek. He did not appear in the 1850 census of Marion Co., however, he was living on this land in 1851 according to a land survey. His home was located in the corner of Franklin Co., on the Old Burnt Stand or Petty Roadwhere Franklin, Brundy and Marion Counties met according to a lawsuit filed July 24, 1891. Disputes over boundary line resulted in Albert Spencer's living in both Marion and Franklin Counties. He was a farmer, hunter and possibly a coal miner. Since Albert Spencer failed to register his grant, he became involved in several lawsuits over land ownership. Out of the 5,000 acre grant he and his family wound up with 350 acres. 3. ![]() Born 1815 at Sumner Co., TN, died ABY 1886 at Marion Co., TN , 70 or 71 years 1860 United States Federal Census Record Name: Patton Anderson Age in 1860: 47 Birth Year: abt 1813 Birthplace: Tennessee Home in 1860: District 10, Marion, Tennessee Gender: Male Post Office: Jasper Household Members: Name Age Patton Anderson 47 Mary Anderson 40 Caroline Anderson 19 William P Anderson 17 Margaret Anderson 12 Mary Anderson 11 Teracy Anderson 5 F Elisha Duncan 1.12 Eligah Duncan 1.12 _______________________________________________________________________ 1880 United States Federal Census Name: Patton Anderson Home in 1880: District 10, Marion, Tennessee Age: 64 Estimated birth year: abt 1816 Birthplace: Tennessee Relation to head-of-household: Self (Head) Spouse's name: Mary Father's birthplace: --- Mother's birthplace: --- Occupation: Farmer Marital Status: Married Race: White Gender: Male Can read/write: yes Household Members: Name Age Patton Anderson 64 Mary Anderson 63 Mary J.
